Core/general ed requirements

Can someone please tell me a good website that lists all the core/general education requirements. I am trying to find a site that tells me how many units from each of the 6 general ed categories are required and what classes qualify for each category.

thanks

[General Requirements | University of South Carolina](<a href=“Apply Now - Office of Undergraduate Admissions | University of South Carolina”>Apply Now - Office of Undergraduate Admissions | University of South Carolina)

Those are the requirements that you need to take in high school. I am looking for information on the core classes required to graduate from USC. Sorry if I was not clear

That’s ok.

This is the best I could find: [Academic Programs - Columbia Campus - Acalog? ACMS?](http://bulletin.sc.edu/content.php?catoid=36&navoid=4232#General_Education_Requirements)

And here are the classes that will be accepted for the core requirements: http://www.sc.edu/provost/forms/CCoreCoursesForAdvisement_2012-13.pdf</a></p>

Thank you…that is what I was looking for

You can look at academic bulletins for the major you are interested in. The link above to the core requirements is the newest thing where they are giving courses different designations but in general the requirements are the same and although they do vary somewhat by major. For current students, gen eds can be done by major bulletin or by new common course…not sure when common core is going to be only option. They are still in the process of determine what courses count for what…contact the college where your major is for better information. I think your major will still determine things like how much foreign language you need and what math track you are on.

scmom12 is correct. Each major is different, and not all majors have a common core.

I believe that there is a common core for all BA’s, but not neccesarally for other bachelor degrees.

My son’s major is very different than most majors with very few general education requirements, as is the case with his friend who is an engineering major.

Even the math requirements are different for different degrees, some degrees you don’t even have to take math, you can take two logic courses or two computer science courses in leu of math. About the only thing that is truly universal between all majors is English 101 and 102.

And ya, what’s on the website can be very confusing with references to this and that that don’t seem to make any sense. There is actually a sort of checklist type form that the advisors have, it’s a lot easier to understand than what is on the website, but there is a different one for each major, nothing universal at all.

EDIT: Dont assume that every major will accept every course on that pdf link. There are at least two classes on that list that my son would not get credit for if he took as they are considered remedial to his major. Also some of those foreign language classes may be considered remedial for some majors, they may count as electives, but will not fulfill your foreign language requirements for that major. Some majors will allow one lab and one non-lab science, others require two lab sciences. Etc.

Thank you for all the help

Check the bulletin as everyone else has said.

If your major is in the College of Arts and Sciences, you’ll either fall into Curricular I or Curricular II. (Basically BA versus BS degrees). The requirements are the same for all majors in each Curricular. The BS puts a little more emphasis on math/science and the BA puts a little more emphasis on humanities courses.

Some majors have specific requirements that fulfill the gen eds. For example, I think Psychology requires Bio 101 as one of the science labs, but the requirement of having 2 science labs is the same. It’s just instead of them both being an elective, only one is.

Other colleges have different requirements. The best bet is to check the bulletin for each specific major you’re interested in.

With all that being said, they completely changed the requirements this year, so I’m not entirely sure the CAS still divides themselves like that or that the gen eds are the same for all. That was the way it was last year and I’d imagine that portion has stayed the same, but I’m not entirely sure. I do know that my two majors both have the same gen ed requirements and are both BA degrees in the CAS.
