Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship

@velmah My thoughts too but somewhat confusing since scholarship notices go out before RD notices and 1golfer1’s comment about admissions sending list to committees within each school made me further wonder.

@txborn I don’t think it would be that uncommon to send out acceptances early to scholarship recipients. I know Emory does, and like northwesty said, Vandy does for at least some scholarships. It is a little weird I guess, but anyone they give a scholarship to would get in anyway.

Both ED and RD are considered for CV but mostly RD get it. They just mean that when the adcoms are doing the first pass on the RD applications and see some that really stand out and are clear acceptances, these get sent to the scholarship committee. The committee then decides who gets the CV and notifies these people before the regular RD decision date. The CV award notification is an effective notice of admission, and usually they’ll also get their normal acceptance letter at the same time as everyone else.

@txborn RD applicants are notified of their admissions and scholarship selection simultaneously, and well in advance of the set decision date.

For the CS, my RD kid got two letters in the same package which arrived in mid-February.

One was an official RD acceptance letter. One was the scholarship award letter. Which makes total sense once you think about it. Who would award a big merit scholarship to a kid who was not going to be accepted?

Also, lots of colleges are making their big scholarship awards (or at least nominations and/or competitions for big scholarship awards) in between the EA/ED date and the RD date. At some schools, getting nominated for a scholarship competition equals an early RD acceptance (Emory) or is basically the same as getting a likely letter (Notre Dame). And then some schools are also sending out “likely” letters during this interim period.

All of those things are ways for the schools to reach out earlier to certain RD applicants that they want to show the love to. In my kid’s case, it has been pretty effective to boost Vandy as compared to the total radio silence coming from other RD schools.

if it comes out today, what time should we expect an email

Do you think all applicants will be notified either way or only scholarship recipients?

@jonmarkp I think all applicants get an email about whether or not they got the scholarship.

Thank you @fdgjfg and @1golfer1. Daughter is just getting anxious since she’s waiting to hear from Vandy before making decision. Other schools continue to send scholarship offers so the waiting is killing us:).

@txborn Can I please ask from which schools you are receiving scholarship offers? My daughter (whose resume only falls short by her not being in the Peace Corps!) has received essentially every honors college/program offered by all of the schools she’s heard from so far…but no financial info yet or merit money. I’m quite fearful that everything I’ve read about merit money not being need-blind is true, and that my daughter is being offered honors as the hook to keep her because she’s a great applicant. As frustrating and stressful as I thought this process would be, it has been that much more so. Tough keeping a calm and reserved facade. Appreciate your insight.

@leemarie66 University of Texas-Austin and University of Oklahoma; all merit and/or leadership/community service based.

Vanderbilt’s merit scholarships are truly based on merit without regard to finances. Good luck to your daughter in finding the scholarships she is looking for!

Thank you, @txborn and @Sam-I-Am !

@Leemarie66 if your child is a NMSF there are several schools who will give a lot of merit money- full tuition plus stipend to a full ride -if she lists them as her first choice. Alabama does this as does the previously mentioned Oklahoma ,UCF and several others that I can’t think of right now
I can tell you that at the schools my kid has applied to, merit scholarships are need blind . She did not apply to any that don’t have merit $$ available as our EFC from need-only schools is insane. All her acceptances have come with merit offers. Some are much more generous than others. Good luck to you! It is a strange waiting game, no?

Thank you so much, @muzzahlady. Much luck your way, as well!

When is the scholarship info scheduled to come out? This Friday?

@tfc38z We don’t know. Hopefully!

Do you know if they send an email to notify you of your acceptance/rejection (for the scholarship, not for admission)? Or is it just reflected on the portal?

@catsrock17 Yes, everyone gets an email, from what I understand. I don’t know about the portal.

@catsrock17 I believe they only send you an email and it is not reflected on the portal.
