This morning I received an email address to at least 200 people announcing a reception at the O'Hare Westin on January 15, 2005. It appears to be an opportunity to meet Cornell Alumni and current students. I've applied to three other Ivies, and none of them have an "information session" at this late date.

Perhaps I'm paranoid but I wondering if they host this simply to find out who's really interested in Cornell. Anybody else have any thoughts on this matter

Our local branch of the alumni association holds a similar event. Our event is completely run by the alumni association, not the admissions office. It provides a way for applicants to meet current students and get the lowdown on what the place is really like.

If you're at all seriously considering Cornell but still have some questions/ reservations about it I encourage you to attend to get some more insight about the school.

But it is in no way an admissions thing, at least out here.

Thanks, that helps, and makes me feel better. I'm certain about Cornell, but I don't have lots of extra time, I didn't want to be "pressured" into a social commitment.
