Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

Saw a couple of other Ivies have their threads started, so I figured we might as well make one too! A bit early, I know :). Totally looking forward to it though.

So I’ll just say my personal plans: likely going to apply to CAS for Computer Science and Economics. What about you guys? (please someone read this so that I don’t look stupid talking to myself :))))

Hello, how’s it going?

I didn’t know there was thread for this, but this would seem helpful to gain beneficial knowledge and perspective from the Class of 2021.

Anyway, I plan on applying to College of Human Ecology, with a major in either Human Development or Human Biology, Health and Society (HBHS).

Anyway, best of luck to everyone!

@weli58 Nice! My sister, who’s currently over at CAS studying bio and chemistry on a pre-med track, just told me that HBHS is a very popular major over there for pre-meds - are you a prospective pre-med?

Hey, I’m probably going to apply early decision to CALS. I dont know exactly which major yet but I want to go down the pre med track

@roboticsnerd33

Hello, how are you all? Yes, I’m a prospective pre-med, and plan to do the pre-med track.

What track/field do you plan on doing?

@student2021

Hello, how are you all? That’s great, that you are doing the pre-med track, as it can give more perspective on the fields of study.

I wish you well well, and best of luck!

Thank you @weli58 ! Best of luck to you too!

@weli58 what major do you think is best for a pre med track ?

Yes, HBHS is predominately premed.
There isn’t a “best” major, but if you only want to fulfill med school prereqs, aim for CALS.

I’m a premed in CAS and iirc you need 40+ liberal art/elective credits to graduate.

@weli58 I mentioned it earlier, but I plan on applying for Economics and Computer Science at CAS. Thought about going the engineering route but given that I really like Econ I figured CAS was the best for application.

@student2021

Hello, how are you all?

Like @jfx246 said, there isn’t a “best” major.

However, as you know, admission to Cornell University as a whole is not possible, as there are specific colleges within Cornell University that you have to specifically apply to. In total, there are seven undergraduate colleges that you can apply to. Here is the link to the official website from Cornell University that effectively describes all the colleges:

http://www.cornell.edu/academics/colleges.cfm

Look through the colleges, and see if you can find an interest in them. Here’s a catch, since you want to do pre-med, you have to cross-some colleges out, because not all colleges will provide the extensive pre-med track. They’re are currently four Cornell University colleges that will prepare you for the pre-med track, they include the following: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Engineering, and College of Human Ecology. These four should be the ones that you should be thinking about applying to.

There the first Step is to find an appropriate college that will match your fit, and know once you have chosen a college, then we can help you into Step two, which is choosing your major from that specific college.

Additionally, I want to ask some questions to help your search for a college.

  1. Do you Prefer a more liberal-arts type of education, or a larger research-dominated type of education?

  2. Do you want a college that has a larger community, so that there are many options to chose from, or do you want a college that has a smaller community, so that you could have closer relationships with the students?

  3. Do you want a college that will explore the different interdisciplinary fields that give you more freedom to study any course, or set-in-stone courses that will prepare you technically for the pre-med track?

These are basic questions to ask, think about them, and if you have a college that you know, please feel free to let us know. Additionally, if you need help with anything, please feel free to let us know. Thank you for your time!

@jfx246

Hello, how are you all? Thank you for your response, as we deeply value your experience and knowledge!

Since you are currently a student at Cornell University (congratulations!), can you please provide your feedback on the experiences of Cornell University, from academics, campus setting, extracurricular, pre-med track, and the other important information, so that we prospective freshman can be prepared to apply to Cornell University. Thank you for your time, and I wish you well with your studies!

@roboticsnerd33

Hello, how are you all? I’m deeply impressed with the choice of study that you have decided to pursue, as I believe you will make a great student at the College of Arts and Sciences, as you desire to explore the wide range of academics (Economics, Computer Science, etc.) leaves us in awe!

Thank you for sharing, and for providing a discussion that has been beneficial!

Hi, I’m planning to apply ED too. I want to apply early to Dyson, CALS, for the course in management and applied economics.

Thank you so much for all the information @weli58. I really appreciate you helping me in this process.
To answer your questions:
1.I would prefer a research dominated education
2.I dont really have a preference regarding the size of the community.
3.I would like to keep my options open even though as of now I want to go to medical college. I am also interested in medical research or research in any biology or chemistry field. So I think I would like to have an interdisciplinary education but only in sciences.

Based on this I think CALS would be a better fit for me.

Right now my biggest worry is whether or not I can get in. I would be considered an international student even though I will complete junior and senior year of high school in America. @weli58 if you dont mind could you look at my thread What are my chances of getting into CALS ? Thank you once again for your time!

Can you be in the top 1200 applicants for Cornell ED?

That usually is what it takes to make the cut…

@KM2021

Hello, how are you all? That is great, I wish you well with your studies!

Can you explain your background, and why it has spurred you to choose the field of study?

Thank you for your time!

@student2021

Hello, how are you all? You’re welcome, and if there is anything else that you need help with, just let us know.

Yes, I will look at your thread and give you an insightful chance.

Thank you for your time!

@ClarinetDad16

Hello, how are you all? Yes, you sure can be in the top 1200 applicants for Cornell University ED.

As far as the statistics go, over 4,336 applicants (from this year’s admission cycle) whom were guaranteed admission to Cornell University; with 45-50% being from Early Decision, and the remaining half being Regular Decision.
