Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

I made this account over a year ago- my mind was set on Hopkins. It was a narrowed mindset hahah but I’ve looked into Cornell more! I’m not sure which I will apply to ultimately. Still am deciding.

@DaedricSaiyan That’s actually really cool. I was thinking of majoring in ORIE with a Dyson minor (if I get accepted, which is very unlikely if I’m being honest :frowning: ). Have you heard of people getting internships for trading (as in stocks, options, futures, derivatives, etc.)? What would one have to study to go that?

@HopkinsHopeful I hope you choose cornell (so you can be here with us!!!) , although hopkins is an awesome place too. Funnily enough, my sister was deciding between hopkins and cornell, but ultimately decided on the latter. Who knows, that might happen to you!

@roboticsnerd33 I’m not in the Department of Economics but I do know they don’t have a formal internship program. You can check out http://www.economics.cornell.edu/undergraduate-program/information-current-students/career-resources/internships for more info on ‘internships’ in Econ.

Why do you think you won’t get in? You never know what’ll catch AOs eyes, so try your best and stay positive

@DaedricSaiyan Honestly, I go to a really tough school and I dun messed up in freshman year (lots of B’s) and sophomore year I got a minuses (borderline A’s…). This year was good, except I got a B+ in my physics class, which doesn’t make sense, because I did get double 5’s on both the Physics C exams.

I hope the profile for my school depicts the toughness, because it doesn’t help that I want to study engineering in college. My unweighted GPA turned out to be a 3.68, which isn’t bad, but by Cornell Engineering standards, seems to be aggressively on the lower side.

Only time will tell, though.

guys by when approx are you all submitting your application?

Hello! I will likely be applying ED to Arts and Sciences with an intent to major in Near Eastern Studies. I visited Cornell and it didn’t take long for me to be absolutely sold on it—it was really incredible; you could literally sense the curiosity and intelligence. Absolute crapshoot for me as my ACT is 33 and I will only have 6 APs at graduation (5s on all until this point) and 4 dual enrollment credits—I’m a LCT language focus so this makes sense. No AP Arabic or AP Russian XD Best of luck to all applying, I’m sure you’ll all do brilliantly.

@dslays Only 6 APs at graudation…? 33 ACT is solid, and if you have good grades, you’re as good as any other top applicant. You probably have great ECs too, so honestly you have a great chance.

Good luck buddy, and stop being so hard on yourself

@dslays 33 ACT is pretty much in the average - to - high percentile for Cornell admissions. APs don’t matter as much as you may think; if your school offered no APs but you still took the most challenging classes you could (and possibly took some AP/IB tests), your admissions chance wouldn’t dwindle in the slightest. Cornell is more focused on what resources are available to you and how you use them to the best of your ability.

How’d y’all do on subject tests from June? (if you took them)

I got a 780 on Physics and an 800 on Math 2. So happy right now!! Literally did not expect this at all because I didn’t prepare nearly as much as I should have. One thing I can confidently say is that knowing Physics C really solidifies my Mech and E&M, so even if I didn’t know the thermo, optics, and nuclear physics parts of the physics subject test, it didn’t really matter in the end  .

@roboticsnerd33 – going to see Cornell soon. congrats on your great scores – what did you use to prep for SAT physics? AP Physics 1 just covers about 1/2 the material it seems on the SAT Physics subject test.

Hey, I’m also a prospective ED applicant for Cornell  I’m planning on applying to CALS, majoring in biological engineering. I’ve toured Cornell twice, once during this past winter and once this past spring, when I toured one of the bioengineering labs.
Not yet sure when I’ll submit my application because I have an international program that will be awarding prizes October 31st (cutting it close, I know) so I might update my resumé the day before the deadline.
In terms of my test scores, I earned a 35 on the ACT and, after checking my subject test scores, was very disappointed with the 680 on the Math 2 and 650 on the Bio M, so I may take the Math 2 again.
My GPA is a 3.8 unweighted.
Hopefully we all get admitted! Good luck on your Common App/UCA essay and Cornell supplements!!

@CA1543 Hey, so I didn’t actually prep for the test. I took AP Physics B as a freshman and the subject test at the end of the year (my school allowed that for some reason, idk why). I didn’t get a good score on the AP exam or on the subject test.

Then, this year, I took both physics C exams and the class; I did a lot better in the AP exams and in the class itself. So, when it came to preparation for this exam, I didn’t really bother to be honest. I figured that you can leave a certain amount blank and still get above a 750 on it, so I just depended on my already solid mechanics and e&m knowledge from Physics C.

I reviewed whatever I could of the optics, thermo, nuclear, modern physics, etc. the morning of the exam outside the test room itself (LOL) with friends who had brought their review books. On the exam, I just answered what I was confident about and left what I wasn’t confident about blank.

I did know some of the extra material (not that much, mind you) because my crazy old physics teacher gave us “extra” tests after we had covered the mech and e&m material for the AP exams, which probably allowed me to answer some of the questions correctly. But, again, MOST of them were left blank…

Has anyone else started/finished their common app essays? I’m just about finishing up my first draft.

@roboticsnerd33 I’ve written my common app main and had it edited, as well as a couple of essays for my non-reach schools (Cornell is my only common app school). I tend to do things really, really early though. My friends joke that if I have a project due in 2018 I’ve probably already started it.

@dslays I’m the exact same way, always starting early and finding ways to improve. I already have a few drafts for my Cornell essay and have finally determined the perfect format for me.
In terms of my Common App essay, however, I’m far behind my schedule, as I’ve only written 2 drafts and have yet to determine how I will conclude the piece.
I have an idea as to how I’ll write my other application essays, an idea that extends to a quick note or small paragraph for some, but for the most part have not begun any of them. Fortunately, some of the essays for schools that don’t use the Common Application can be sent my essay.

I’m afraid my essay is awful LOL

Hey guys! I am applying ED as well, planning on majoring Animal Science.

Does anyone know where to find Cornell’s acceptance rate by major?
@HRSMom How did you find out that AEM was 7%??

@lulu0207 Cornell doesn’t release acceptance rates by major, only by school; alot of applicants are undeclared/prone to switch, so there’s really no use for the school trying to fill up seats in terms of majors in a particular subject. Here’s what I can find in terms of admission statistics:

https://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000001.pdf
^this is just logistical stuff on SAT percentiles + % accepted people

https://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000003.pdf
^these are admissions statistics per college in 2011. This is about 5/6 years old, but it gives a good indication of how many seats Cornell usually has. Cornell’s # of seats per college usually doesn’t change drastically, but the applicant pool does. Cornell may take 1200 students for one college one year and 1250 students for the same college the next year, but if the applicant pool goes from 30k to 40k, the admissions rate will drop considerably.

The most recent statistics can be found here:

http://irp.dpb.cornell.edu/tableau_visual/admissions

On the right hand side you can select the particular college/school and see the recent years’ statistics for that college/school.

@blprof @DaedricSaiyan Great thanks to both of you!
