Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

What is the social life like at Cornell? Is it similar to Notre Dame’s?

@junior2017 not sure… But hopefully a current Cornell student can answer that!

Also, how did everyone find the subject tests this past Saturday? I did Math 2 and Physics, and I didn’t really think they were terrible.

@roboticsnerd33 i took math 2 as well and i didn’t think it was super challenging either.

@junior2017 Yeah, that was the common sentiment that my friends’ and I shared.

In other news, ACTs were today, anyone take them?

Also, I started drafting my Common Application essay… Just thinking about all the supplements that I’m going to have to write in the future…

Any new people planning to apply ED?

Yeah. I am applying ED. @roboticsnerd33

Good luck guys! If you have any questions about the Cornell application process (esp: ED-related), PM me

Applying ED as well. SAT scores are alright, I took the old one and got M-770 CR-790 WR-690 and an 800 on Math Ii and 700 US History as are my grades. We’ll see I guess.

I want to ED to CALS as well, but since it is a public college funded by New York State and I am international student, my chances will be lowered. (Bummer) maybe Duke maybe Cornell, who knows? Can’t decide until last moment…

One more day until APs come out (on the west coast). Everyone just uses a VPN and checks it early lol regardless of location…

Anyone nervous? What APs did you all take? What are you score predictions?

I took Calc BC, Physics C Mech, Physics C E&M, and Statistics. Predicting a 4 on BC, Borderline 4 and 5 on Physics C Mech, 4 on Physics C E&M, and Borderline 4 and 5 on Stats…

We’ll just have to see!

Anyone…?

I took Macro, Physics 1, and APUSH and got 5s on them all somehow. I also have a 5 on Micro from last year

@bluekou23 Wow, that’s really good! I got 3 5’s and a 4 on BC (with a 5 AB subscore) because I didn’t study the material until just three days before… Junior year busyness kept me up late in May not even doing AP studying…

I know what you mean, haha. Those scores are amazing though!!! @roboticsnerd33

Hey Cornell hopefuls! Cornell engineer here! (gonna be a sophomore this fall) Wishing you guys good luck; if anyone has any questions about the school/apps/essays/etc feel free to PM

5 on AP English Lang and 4 on APUSH (self-studied). Lucked out on a 5, but that’s still pretty good for having not taken the course!

I want to get on Wall Street but I’m more interested in majoring in Econ rather than something in Dyson. Bad idea?

@bluekou23 those are awesome scores dude/dudette!!! Thanks, I worked hard for the physics c’s and the statistics, and hoenstly I’m so happy for the BC one too.

@deeeznuts I don’t think it’s a bad idea necessarily. I’ve heard of plenty of cornell econ majors getting recruited by wall street firms and such. I believe the majors they look at are ORIE/CS/ECON/AEM/ILR/Statistics and a whole bunch of other ones that are probably applicable. Oh, also math.

@HopkinsHopeful that’s really awesome! You applying ED to cornell or hopkins? Your username suggests the latter

@daedricsaiyan hey! Thanks for stopping by on this thread – that’s really awesome of you  . We’ll definitely ask you questions.

I just have one request: unless it’s something private to you and you don’t want it to be shared, do you think you guys can just ask questions in the thread itself? That way, we might all be able to benefit from this great knowledge. Thanks peeps

@deeznuts tbh there are plenty of other majors that apply to jobs in Wall Street, Golden Sachs etc. @roboticsnerd33 covered these other ones pretty well so I’ll try adding on some more info about it:

You basically have two broad options to choose from: engineering or pure economic/business.

Engineering majors that usually can get recruited by financial firms, Wall Street etc include CS (Computer Science) and Operations Research and Engineering Majors (ORE). Makes sense when you think about it; a CS major is usually hired by financial firms to develop algorithms and make predictions on the market, stocks etc; an ORE major is versed in financial management and linear programming as well, which applies directly to both an engineering and/or financially intensive field.

The pure business/economic majors are found in the Dyson School / Department of Economics (Note: Engineers can get a Dyson Business minor directly affiliated with the Dyson School). Basically, majors here focus on industry, financial management, analyzing trends etc. The obvious major to have for a career on Wall Street, some might say.

Dyson offers more majors (one of which is applied Econ); Econ is Econ. If you’re interested in some specific aspect of Economics, I’d recommend Dyson.
