Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

those are RD from 2011

@blahbluh psych minor!

I have question and not sure if it is right for this forum. All the ED/RD results threads have recommendation letters ratings(1-10). How do you know how good was your recommendation letter as we waive the right to see them.

@rsmith0208 You don’t. Most are guessing based on their relationships with teachers. In my case my AP Physics teach loves me and would probably be a 10/10 on my subjective scale, but I also know she’s a terrible writer so for all I know I got a generic copy/paste recommendation. It’s more of a gut feel.

@SouthernHope: Good luck to your child on their application to Cornell!

My daughter chose Cornell to apply ED to the College of Engineering for several reasons. She loved everything about the engineering program, which offers many options, has excellent facilities, and includes several aspects missing from other programs she visited such as competition teams, and a nearly 50-50 male/female split. Every other program she toured either had no competition teams or was so heavily male (though trying to increase the number of women in the program) that she did not like it as much.

[As parent, Cornell’s Engineering’s stellar reputation was a definitely a draw. I want her to end up at a highly-respected, recognized program.]

She had also worried as a prospective engineering major that since she did not already know much about engineering and she would not fit in. However, she has always exceled in and LOVED math. She loved the tech classes she took in middle school. Once she took Physics junior year in HS, that was it: engineering it was.

She excels at science in general, physics in particular. Loves it and is very enthusiastic about it. When we listened to the presentation at Cornell by the Director of Engineering Admissions, he spoke directly to that: Cornell understands that most high schools do not offer engineering courses. Cornell looks instead for a love of math and science, and a desire to solve problems using math and science. She felt that it described her perfectly. Add to that the fact that she loved the campus, Ithaca, and other aspects of life at Cornell, it was immediately her number one choice.

Why not other Ivies? Well, truthfully there is a history at her public HS of 2-3 top students per year attending Cornell. There is not as much history of acceptance at other Ivies – one here or there, but not often. No one in recent history has been accepted at Columbia or Princeton, for example. Cornell seemed both a great fit for her personally, and accesible: a school where she had a better chance of acceptance than other Ivies.

Of course, admission is basically a crap shoot for everyone since they receive so many qualified applicants. My daughter’s stats are high enough that they at least should not disqualify her: 35 ACT, 1520 SAT (760 math/760 verbal) each one sitting, 4.0 UW GPA and 4.5 W GPA. Taking the most rigorous HS courses available to her, etc. etc.

We will find out tomorrow. She would absolutely love to attend Cornell if that is to be. But she won’t melt into a puddle if she ends up someplace else. She applied early action to Northeastern, WPI, and Binghamton (state school safety, with a respected Engineering program). She has or will apply RD to Stevens, RPI, Lehigh, Villanova.

Good luck to all you EDers tomorrow. This brings back memories two years ago when my daughter came home from school to check her decision. Such a fantastic moment and I hope it for all of you. Stay calm and if it’s meant to be, it will be a great moment for you as well.
