Cornell ED Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

Did anyone get the email for the instructions? The application portal says “The Cornell University Undergraduate Admissions Office has emailed instructions regarding online decision notification to all freshman early decision applicants.”

@maya1x I believe just about everyone got one. Did you select a college choice in your common app?

@blahbluh I am! I applied as a prospective dual English and psych major. Are you planning to concentrate?

Day 38 (?): I’ve lost all sanity.

Re#1313:

This is all I know about (or can recall , anyway), but it is from back in 2011:
https://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000177.pdf
https://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000176.pdf
https://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000003.pdf

I don’t have any more recent data. However, on another recent thread, CC user “stencils” posted this:

"My DD visited CALS this fall, and received a CALS-specific fact sheet with some interesting info about the new incoming Fall 2016 CALS class:

Freshman class size (all CALS programs): 675
Admit Rate: 13%
Middle 50% SAT: 1260-1460
Middle 50% ACT: 29-33"

@reformedman Actually got the instructions?? Or just email saying instructions are coming??

Can someone post the content of the email on instructions? I only got the one confirming that it is on thursday, I didn’t get any code or anything to view decision on thursday?

@Shrilkshire If it says that the portals will be sent tomorrow, IT WILL BE SENT TOMORROW. dont freak out haha

Phew, you guys got me stressed for a moment there

There is no other email. I think they will send PIN and instructions tomorrow morning the same day as results. Good luck.

Do you think being one of the very few applicants from a country to a particular major affects chances in any way?

@monydad do you have information from this year? Or if not this year closer to this year, like last year?

@redgobig no not the instructions, just the notice that there will be instructions coming Thursday. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.

Given that you guys are all nervous wrecks and you’re looking for things to do between now & Thursday, may I ask a few questions?

My kid got his RD application in yesterday and I’m trying to get a better picture of Cornell (which I know very little about). Just in your own opinions, what made all of you choose Cornell for your ED choice? What is it about this college that’s more appealing than the other Ivies and more appealing than top colleges in general? (I’m assuming that most of you are superstars and likely had your choices.)

And then a specific question on the individual colleges:
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
College of Architecture, Art and Planning.
College of Arts and Sciences.
College of Business.
College of Engineering.
College of Human Ecology.
School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR)

Other than Engineering, which others are considered the hardest to get into? Is it smart to choose an “easier” one? Or is that old game transparent?

@SouthernHope I applied to Arch in College of Architecture, Art and Planning.
I applied because Arch undergrad program at Cornell is simply the top in the country.
According to what I’ve heard, AAP is considered as one of the hardest college to get into (many others might have different opinions), especially the Arch program.
I go to school in Georgia but visited Cornell twice, loved it.
I once considered applying to Enology in CALS, simply because it is relatively easier to get in and Enology is something I am interested in too, but later I thought I would regret studying enology if I didn’t have the guts to apply to Arch.

@Southernhope Cornell is very fit-based, so you can’t really say that one is harder to get into than another. It all depends on what your application looks like. If you have many EC’s with architecture, engineering, etc. it will be easier for that person to get into AAP than perhaps ILR. It all depends on each person.

There’s no real way to find out how difficult it is to get in to each because I think it depends on the competition applying but here’s some stats that can show the rate of entry:
collegeacceptedappliedacceptance rate
ALS
1034530919.5
CAS
26411705715.5
CoE
1787
869620.5
HOTL

HUMEC

ILR

What drew my S to Cornell was first the rating, then the reputation.
After reading through the website I was encouraged that this college didn’t have much of any negatives for us but plenty of positives. I love the campus comfort and the reviews. He loves the tools that he’ll be equipped with. The prestigious name ain’t too shabby either.
I guess when it comes down to one thing, he likes the graduation rate which to him translates as teachers able to convey education in such an understandable way that the desire to stay the full 4 and pass the course requirements is great.

@reformedman where did these stats come from? are those for ED or RD?

@silverphi those are probably ED rates from the past couple of years

@reformedman very insightful stats! thank you. @RUHTRA999 I will send a good karma signal out into the world to get you into that architecture college!
