Cornell/Ithaca internship?

Hi.

I will be attending Cornell next year, majoring in econ. Ithaca's a small city. How can I get an internship? I'm assuming it's going to be during summer. So would I have to go to another city for an internship? I come from LA and it's a large city so maybe I can get one there...

Someone should write an Introduction to Internships paper.

Companies, organizations and universities frequently hire interns for summer work. In general, they prefer to hire juniors as they’ve had enough in courses to produce useful work. Internships can be had by looking at company postings for internships, looking around at your own school, asking your network (family, friends, professors, parents of friends, politicians), or just searching for internships on the web. Internships can be paid (they pay you), unpaid, or bought (you pay them to intern with them).

There are often logistical issues in doing an internship. Some internships provide housing. Some provide money for housing and food. Some pay for travel. Some provide recreation. Some are like real jobs where you work for a paycheck and have to deal with the life issues on your own. With these, you need to find housing and transportation near the internship.

I know zilch about internships for econ majors. Finding internships for STEM majors isn’t that hard. You might want to ask your econ professors or someone in the department about finding internships. You might also talk to the career center at Cornell to see if they have suggestions.

I did a google search for economics 2010 summer and found that the SEC hires econ majors for internships.

Here’s another one from the Cleveland Federal Reserve:

Research (Opportunities are filled for 2010)

Models complex economic systems, analyzes data, and evaluates economic information to support the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s monetary policy, supervisory, and payments system responsibilities. The department produces academically respected economic research, monitors and reports on regional and national economic trends, and helps to craft public communications on economic issues.

Interns will work with Economists, gather and analyze data, and participate in daily update of economic trends by reading and summarizing economic related articles

We seek students majoring in Economics or Math/Statistics.

I recommend you to get to know the Career Office/Center of Cornell as early as possible. Most schools’ Career Office offer multiple resources to help one to prepare resume, learn how to interview, get internships and permanent jobs. They host career fairs and on compus interviews from major corporations. A lot of students just never take advantage of what was offered.

^ Getting involved with the office of career services early is critical.

I attend Cornell and can tell you that if you look in the right places you will definitely be able to find something.

After my freshman year I was deciding between an Economic Policy internship at the Center for American Progress (Leftist think tank across the street from the White House), a project consulting position with the US Treasury, and a position with Wells Fargo in compliance.

Do well in school, network your ass off, and use the services offered to you, and you’ll find something for sure.
