Cornell Nanobiotech HS Summer Internship

Was anyone accepted? I would never believe that none of CC students would get into the program!

haha i wasn't accepted...what a surprise....uh there is a really small chance that a CC student was accepted although there maybe is like one....only 10 kids....what are the chances they are on CC

rejected too. i think if you haven't gotten anything yet, it just means the acceptance/rejection letter hasn't reached you yet. it seems that they are notifying about 100 of the rejected people at a time.

although i doubt they'd send out the acceptance letters in bulk

hi... maybe we should just post stuff that we wouldn't mind if they read... this is like totally public right?

I got in! wow...didn't expect that...

no way, drew! good job....

can i read your essay?

i got an acceptance today!
....so0o0 happy!!^_^
good luck to all of you.. you deserve it!

YES! CC takes 2/10, meaning a fifth of the spots. Excellent....world domination is next.

sorry, world domination needs 50% at least...

good jo0b guys!

I also got in! I guess I will see some of you in July :)

The website doesn't give much detail on what happens there. How much of the day is in the lab? What kind of work do students get to do? If anyone has done this program, please let us know what a typical day is like.

Would someone accepted for summer 2008 plz. advise what it took to get in and some brief descript. of what he/she expects to be doin'...would someone who did in summer 2007 let us know what the mystery of this program is!

pretty sure this is a minority program
you will get an email rejection with the other email addresses list- at least you can see the other hundred or more people who they rejected

I'm a white male who was accepted last year. Not a minority program.

As far as questions about the program go...

5 days a week, ~8 hours a day for 4 weeks.

Most of that time is lab/clean room time, but some time is spent working with specialized equipment, some time is spent doing background research, and one day was spent up at an off-campus lab learning about culturing bacteria and other things of the sort. Also, near the end some time was spent preparing a poster presentation. Besides that, you will have a little bit of work to do outside of the normal work schedule, but most of the other time is your own.

As far as the specifics of the project, it will change from year to year, I believe. Our project focused on observing chemotaxis of a specific bacteria in microfluidic devices. It entailed designing and creating the device, refining this design, preparing bacteria, and observing the bacteria in a chamber (or at least attempting to...). We also had to learn how to research and read scientific articles, and prepare our report/poster. You'll have plenty to do in the 4 weeks you're there, but there's also plenty of time to have some fun.

As far as how to get in...its hard to say. All the interns debated why we were chosen, and I don't think any of us could really tell you. Make sure your letter of intent conveys a desire and a need to do this sort of scientific research. That's all I can really tell you.

I'd definitely recommend this experience to anyone interested in science, especially those who haven't had the opportunity for such an experience. Any other questions let me know!

Since early application was recommended, does that mean that it's possible that all the positions are filled already? I'm asking because I just sent my letter...today.

Honestly, with the lack of an informational website and no stats requirements I mistakenly presumed the program to be a second rate one. Oyy.

When they say "application deadline", do they mean all materials must be IN by then, or just postmarked? >_> Heheheh...

Yeah, same question ^

Well, I applied online so you cant really postmark that. And the materials only consists of the letter of intent, which I'm guessing must be postmarked by today, hence the "Application materials must be postmarked by March 3, 2008."
