Are they going to call our schools and talk to our science teachers they had us list?

A friend of mine who applied got a rejection email a few days ago.
You guys may want to check your emails...maybe the spam folder, too.

^ He's probably joking. I got an email from Cornell today...but it was just more college spam, lol.

haha i certainly hope you meant my FRIEND was joking because I wasn't.
although I must admit it would've made a nice joke...still, a lot of important stuff gets chucked in the spam folder for me (sbcglobal) so it was a good place to check.

^ Well yeah, I was referring to your friend since if I were to refer to you, I'd use feminine pronoun ^^

I applied for this too, but I don't really know much about it :(
Do any alumni have anything they'd like to share?

Of course they're gonna call the teachers...only to the applicants they're interested in...:<).

They really shouldn't do that. They didn't request permission or inform us which is really unprofessional. If that's true, I will have to inform my teachers beforehand. Are you really positive?

Are they going to ask for a transcript?

Why would you have to forewarn your teachers, Marimare, if you have nothing to hide or be ashamed of? Well, never mind, I can imagine you'd want to give them a few tips on nice things to say about you. :)

^ OH yes, I have deep, dark secrets >: D

Common grace drives my actions. It's just impolite to list somebody's name to be contacted without informing them first. I mean, I'm not going to go off and warn them now, but the nanobiotech website should have a sentence telling you what they're doing with various information. That's the standard of the industry--whenever one lists contacts, there is an explicit agreement that you give permission for people to use this info to contact your references, etc.. I have half a mind to email my teachers and tell them to not say anything should they call them and hang up--this practice is simply crude.

Perhaps the reason they didn't request transcripts from everyone is that you are all amazing applicants, and they may select from face value the information you inputted in the online app, and choose 8 or 10 applicants.

Then they would only have to contact 8-10 teachers instead of 80-100. Then again, does anyone really know if they contact the teachers listed? I suggest checking with your teachers that you used as reference to see if they have been contacted, this may ease the anxiety.

Otherwise, just wait to hear a yay or nay on April 11th . Good luck!

Do they contact thorugh e-mail or snail-mail?

Thanks for setting me straight, Marimare.
I can understand if you want your teachers to be prepared to pass on a good review, but it's hard to believe that you would really tell your teachers to hang up the phone because "the practice is crude".
Anyway, good luck to everyone.

^ I guess the other side of that is that it's embarrassing for me.

Oh yes, good luck everybody!!

i think they sent out decisions here

reject for me.

rejected here. 900 ppl for 10 spots. oh well, it doesn't matter to be b/c if i were picked, i wouldn't go to this one. there are tons of other better summer programs out there that actually let me do my own research.

^ Ditto. Cornell was at the bottom of my preferences. It's only 3 weeks and admission was sort of a total crapshot. But congrats to all who got in!

yeah i got rejected too :/ i have no idea what i'm doing this summer now
