I was wondering which university would be best. I was accepted into these schools’ schools of engineering (mechanical engineering). I am wondering which school is best in the long run regarding career opportunities and what I truly gain from studying at this university. Also I am looking at these based on these criteria above without looking at costs and prices.
Thank you for any help!
They are all equivalent for undergrad engineering. There is no objective “best in the long run.” All 3 will have more academic and extracurricular opportunities than you could every possibly exhaust.
In terms of reputation… Cornell & Michigan have better reputations overall… Cornell is in the Ivy League, and Michigan is in the top 5 of public flagships, and has a ridiculously large and loyal alumni base.
Are you considered a resident of Illinois or Michigan for tuition purposes?
If cost is a concern, go for the cheapest option. If cost is not an issue, Cornell and Michigan are best because they are slightly better universities overall and they also have greater flexibility when it comes to changing majors. Between Cornell and Michigan, go for fit.
I would respectfully disagree. Illinois has a stellar engineering reputation, easily on par with the other two, if engineering reputation is what you’re concerned about.
Thank you for your input and no I am not a resident of any of the states in which these universities are located in.
eyemgh, nobody is disputing UIUC’s engineering prowess. In Engineering, those three universities are equal. But Cornell and Michigan are stronger universities overall. Since they all cost roughly the same (UIUC is roughly $3,000/year cheaper than Michigan and Michigan is roughly $4,000/year cheaper than Cornell), I think Cornell and Michigan make better sense.
I’d pick Michigan or Cornell, and between those two I’d pick Michigan. But it’s hard to argue that one is better than the other.
