Cornell vs. UMich(Honors)

Which one would you choose if u were accepted to both Cornell and UMich honors. The major is in engineering btw.... probably double electrical/mechanical engineering. I am most interested in the quality of education, rather than social life or athletics.

Cornell with no hesitation

Cornell would be my choice, but I wouldn't say I'd pick Cornell over UMich with no hesitation.
Since you are mostly interested in quality of education and if you go by USnews rankings, UMich is ranked higher in many engineering disciplines than Cornell.

Definately pick Cornell.

How much money would you be getting from Michigan and how much from Cornell?

From what I can gather, UMich and Cornell are on pretty equal footing when it comes to engineering. Pick whichever school you personally prefer.

Michigan has an excellent engineering program but it is much bigger and, being a state school, its funding is dependent on politics. If you are from out of state, you will pay about double what in-state residents pay, probably close to what Cornell costs. And you will, in the end, be getting a public education, with all the anonymity, bureaucracy, and lack of personalized attention that implies. IMHO not worth it.

as much as you are looking at Q-o-Education, I think the schools are on pretty similar footing. Look at other factors like FA and environment.

Do you have any clue what field you want to work in after graduating?

If you're thinking anything automotive, you can't go wrong with Michigan. Home of the Big Three and the Japanese companies all have research centers right around Ann Arbor.

nothing like an ivy league degree my friend

Are you planning on going to grad school? If you are, then your undergrad is not really that important. They are both great schools. If you do well you have the same chance in going to the same grad program from either school. Check out the TA situation and try to go to the admitted student open houses. It's important to talk to the kids in the programs. Don't get hung up on the IVY status.

Cornell is the best Engineering School in the Ivies. 4th in the US (MIT, Stanford, Caltech are the top 3). It's the best for material science in the world because of the 100 million $ new Nanotech facility.

Michigan is a good school but I don't think it comes close to it.

"4th period?" There's hardly such a thing as "1st, period," much less 4th. I suppose UC-Berkeley just dropped off the map?

I can't agree with that either. I'd probably place Cornell near the bottom of the top 10. In terms of university prestige though, it's back up in the top 5.

Firstly, I am not planning to get a scholarship of any kind from either school, and i am from Thailand, so I am considered international. The tuition fee is not a factor to consider since i believe that the quality of education if far more important. And yes, I am definitely doing grad school afterwards, and will plan to get into MIT or Caltech at grad school (that is if i do well in undergrad).

The major i intend to study is double mechanical/electrical engineering. If i plan to go to such grad school as MIT and caltech, will gradution with an undergrad degree from cornell or umich have a different effect on my chance?

Also, another question for you guys. Cornell or Umich, which one is easier to get in.... considering umich has a wayy higher acceptance rate.

Btw thx 4 all ure replies

UMich is difficult if you are out-of-state...it's tough to call although I think most would say Cornell is more difficult.

You have high aspirations, simply planning on MIT or Caltech grad school? Heh, might want to just figure out where you want to go undergrad first.

Again - I don't believe the quality of education or reputation of the two undergrad engineering programs are that different. Cornell is probably more prestigious, but you need to just check each school out for yourself and decide.

The OP posted this in Cornell board, so I understand the replies will be a bit biased; but Cornell_BioEngin just FYI, here is the rankings for engineering programs; maybe a bit outdated but I doubt anything drastic has changed.

BEST PROGRAMS At schools whose highest degree is a doctorate
(*Public university or college)

Massachusetts Inst. of Technology 4.8

Stanford University (CA) 4.7
University of California–Berkeley* 4.7

California Institute of Technology 4.6

Georgia Institute of Technology* 4.5
U. of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign* 4.5

University of Michigan–Ann Arbor* 4.4

Carnegie Mellon University (PA) 4.3

Cornell University (NY) 4.2
Purdue Univ.–West Lafayette (IN)* 4.2

Princeton University (NJ) 4.1

And for ME and EE since these are what the OP is interested in,

Mechanical
1. Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
2. Stanford University (CA)
3. University of California–Berkeley*
4. University of Michigan–Ann Arbor*
5. U. of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign*

Electrical/Electronic/Communications
1. Massachusetts Inst. of Technology
2. Stanford University (CA)
3. University of California–Berkeley*
4. U. of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign*
5. University of Michigan–Ann Arbor*

Yes i applied to caltech and MIT undergrad too (incase a miracle happens). For all the other schools i applied in undergrad: umich, UT-Austin, Harvey Mudd. I was thinking that if i am not satisfied with the schools i got accepted at i will transfer to cornell.... but then again if i got accepted to michigan i am not sure whether i want cornell or umich more..

live- i am an international applicant... so which uni do u think is easier to get in as an international student... umich or cornell?

If you VALUE PRESTIGE, and unless you can get into Stanford, MIT, or Cal tech, Cornell would be your school. There isnt another institution out there with higher marks in renown and engineering recognition

Stanford is god but only wanna-stay virgins would wanna go to MIT or Cal-Tech ;)
