A guy at my school claims that he received an email that he was accepted to Cornell business last week.
I have not seen anything about that being possible here on CC.
He is not disadvantaged or a minority-just a full pay, prep school white guy.
Is is possible he is telling the truth??
Is he the only one?
Several schools within Cornell release some acceptances early. I know the School of Hotel Admin has already done so
@SaSmith I think he’s lying. I have received nothing.
It sounds like he received a likely letter. No reason to assume he is lying just because you received nothing, @MrElonMusk. They are rare.
- likely letters come in the mail, not through email.
- likely letters are usually for urm/disadvantaged.
Some schools do release acceptance early. If I remember correctly, hotel school (which is now part of the college of business) does. I don’t remember which of their acceptances they release early or why, just that I’ve seen it in the past. Don’t worry about it; it doesn’t affect you.
CORRECTION: likely letters come through email but it’s usually 4-5pm today…
I got a likely letter by email today and I am not an URM, legacy, or anything like that @MrElonMusk
@piranhavator I said usually. Congrats though!
Huh. How about that?
So…could this guy have received a random and unique email that says he is accepted RD to Cornell over a week ago?
He is making a really big deal about it since no one else at our VERY high achieving school has heard anything-until today…a few WIE likeleys.
OP, why worry about it so much? Just do your own thing. As other posters have said here, they are aware of early acceptances having happened. If you applied, it doesn’t have any bearing on your chances. Why do you care? If you think he’s lying, just let it go. Why do you feel you have to police this?
For those of us new to the college admission process this year…please confirm that there are candidates who do NOT receive a “likely” letter but are still admitted on March 28th. Also, do all colleges at Cornell release likely letters? If not, which ones do? Good luck to everyone!
@2018hsmom if it will make you feel better… I’d suggest you look at the class of 2021 regular decision thread from College confidential… look for around March 28,2017 and you’ll see many rejections… as well as some number of acceptances.
long story short, only a subset of all acceptance get these early notifications… the rest happen at the end of the month… bearing in mind ~85% of regular decision applicants are rejected
@grotonMAdad Thanks for the reply. I guessed that most candidates would not find out until Ivy Day but was curious if all the schools sent “likely” letters or not. There are so many outstanding young people- trying to find the best university-good luck to everyone.
To answer your question, I didn’t apply to the business school but I got a “Dean’s Scholar” likely letter from CAS this past Wednesday. It is not a Diversity hosting likely letter and not many people receive them, but some do (probably around 70 accepted students to CAS at Cornell). As for why they decided they like me so much I have no clue but I’m just really grateful to have received it.
CAS and CoE are bound by the Ivies agreement of releasing their results on the same day, the other schools are not. Sometimes the Hotel school send sout decisions as early as Feb.
Cornell sends out very few likely letters. They send out likely to women in CoE, URMs, athletes, and very outstanding applicants.
Everyone should relax.
OP’s friend is most likely telling the truth.
@ostargazingo congrats on the likely letter. Our son applied to engineering so I haven’t seen anyone post about a likely letter. Oh well, only 7 more days.
