Did anyone else get an early write for regular decision? I was so excited... quote* "It is very likely you will be accepted to Cornell."

yeah i got it

congrats guys, what schools?

Arts and sciences bebe

sweet. I'm in ILR.

yeah i got it...does it mean that we are definitely, 100% in?
i got it from engineering.

Did basically everyone who's going to be accepted recieve a likely letter? Is there still hope if you didn't recieve one?

ditto to that

i got one but my friend didn't, we're very similarly qualified, what does this mean for her?

The likely letters are only for people who's applications they have reviewed already and who the Adcoms view as strong potential candidates. These letters are NOT sent to everyone who will be accepted and are not truly guarantees that those applicants will be accepted, though I have never heard of someone receiving a likely letter but not getting accepted.

Ok, that makes sense. But haven't all decisions already been made? (That's what the 2010 website says) I'm already in, but I'm worried for friends of mine that haven't heard anything.

Not receiving a likely letter does not necessarily mean that you are rejected. As blackferrari2006 said, likely letters are sent to the strongest applicants. The overwhelming majority of acceptees do not get one; that majority will find out on March 30 online or whenever the letters are mailed. Also, certain colleges send likelies only to minorities or athletes--it all depends. I wouldn't worry for your friend, cugirl.

so then are the likely recipients more competative than the rest of the admitted class? (sorry if that's a duh question)

I guess you could say they're more qualified than most applicants--I'm not sure if competitive is the right word. The people that receive likelies are people that impress the admissions committee. But in the end, it doesn't matter so much. An acceptance is an acceptance, whether you get a likely letter or not. I doubt that too many people at college will ask, "Did you get a likely letter?"

^at which time you respond, "No, actually they knocked on my door and offered me a limo ride to campus to sign with the school of _________."

honestly, i'm just sarcastic enough to respond so :)
