Hello! I am interested in applying to Cornell, specifically to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ major “Biometry and Statistics.” Does anyone know whether it is possible to be pre-med at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences? What is the pre-med advising like at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences?
CALS is well suited for students with pre-med plans, particularly if, as appears to be the case with you, they are interested in its programs in general.
I think there are quite a few pre-meds in CALS. No personal experience, but was told by someone there it was the easier way to do it, and therefore tougher to get into bio through CALS than it was through CAS.
But if you are biometry and statistics that doesn’t apply to you. Sounds like an interesting major with good job prospects if pre-med doesn’t work out.
The main difference between colleges at Cornell are the college specific requirements. For example, both CAS and CALS have biological sciences as a major option, but in CALS the major gets you a BS whereas CAS gives BA. This is because CAS is humanities/liberal arts focused with distribution requirements that ensure you are well-rounded, whereas CALS has more science oriented requirements. A lot of pre-meds find the requirements at CALS and HumEc more relaxed so they have more time to focus on their med school courses. However, there is always the internal transfer option if you find later at Cornell that you are a better fit with another college
