Cornell Uncensored

I am a sophomore on break with nothing to do. If you have any questions about Cornell, feel free to ask ! I will try my best to give you an unbiased and truthful answer.

Congrats to all those that got in ED ! You are going to LOVE Cornell !!

Do you know how many of the freshman dorms are singles as opposed to doubles and triples. Is there a dorm with mostly singles or are they spread out through all of the dorms.

Is the food science program good? What do you know about the food science program?

arobins92, the freshman dorm, Clara Dickson Hall, is almost ALL singles. over 500 students live in the building, making it the largest dorm in the ivy league. if you request a single, it is very easy to get one. all of the dorms have singles, but not to the same extent as dickson.

tigerton, my friend loves the food science program and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the field. I will ask her a little more about the program and will get back to you.

I have some questions about the living arrangements on campus, but they may be kind of odd lol.

Are there any kitchens in the dorm buildings to prepare food (I know some of the program houses have them, but I’m talking about the regular dorms)? What about the bathrooms? Are there any private bathrooms or are they all large to accommodate the entire floor?

social/sex life?

Free Focus, I believe all dorm buildings have kitchens.
The newer dorms like Mews and CKB all have private showers and toilets that can be used by only one person at a time.

The low rises and high rises have somewhat private bathrooms. There will be like one toilet and one shower in the bathroom , which you can lock yourself in , but people can still get in and brush their teeth for example.

Donlon(which I lived in), Dickson, and Balch all have the traditional “dorm style” showers

elohel, they me just say that there is always an opportunity for you to have fun at Cornell…haha

Honestly speaking, the social life at Cornell is amazing and therefore I do not want to be home right now writing on cc all day …haha

Hey Dennis, thanks for the offer…what kind of freedom does Cornell allow you in your laptop selection…also I’m thinking of just letting Cornell assign me whatever housing they decide, would you recommend requesting a certain residence hall or something? thanks again as I’m really excited about Cornell haha

How are you paying for it? How much will you be in debt?

acerbus, you can pick whatever laptop that you want. i would say now, the campus is at least 60/40 mac/pc. cornell offers services for both types of computers. you cant request a certain dorm (unless you choose a program house or are a girl and request a single sex dorm in balch)

thanks dennis XD I’m in ED and im excited as hell…

i looked at laptop deals, and I must say they kind of suck… probably I’ll end up bringing a used laptop or buying a new one.
anyone know about the at&t cell phone deals Cornell offers?

i am not sure whether at&t has phone specials exclusively for cornell students but I know that you get a discount on your bill for being a Cornell student.

How difficult is it to get a double in Mews or CKB? I’m going to have to do a double and I REALLY want to be in either of the two new buildings, especially since they’re the same price as the older buildings. My guide on the Freshman Experience Tour told us to “put down that you have a dust allergy if you want to get into the new buildings.” Is it really that difficult?

How long are the breaks (winter, spring)? A few weeks? How difficult is it to readjust when coming back to school?

Malan,
It is hard to say , you will be randomly assigned a dorm to live in. You might just be lucky and get to live in CKB or Mews. Do remember that the other dorms are great places to live in as well. I lived in Donlon my freshman year and would choose to live there again over Mews & CKB any-day.

Free Focus,
Winter break is about a month depending on when you finish your finals. It gets cut down by a week if choose to go back to school early for rush week.

Spring break is about a week.

freefocus, it is usually not that hard to readjust, especially since the semesters start off pretty low key and easy (except for architecture…they throw the new assignment at you the first studio day and expect things done for the next class…sucks…)

@malan89- Just say that you have allergies. Dust will be everywhere, but since the older dorms don’t have AC you must open your windows for (minimal) cooling when it is needed (throughout the year, as it’s the easiest way to keep the temperature controlled, even in winter). I’m in Donlon and for the first month of school it was miserably hot in here and I envied Mews/CKB kids so much, but once that month is over, it’s quite comfortable and Donlon is definitely one of the most popular dorms.
