****Cornell University Class of 2021 Regular Decision Thread****

I am an international student and I’m planning on retaking the SAT in January, any tips?
Former SAT:
MATHS: 740
ENGLISH: 620
My English is really lowering my chances …

Don’t worry kanyin, you’re not alone in matters of having English lowering your overall chance! It’s normal for many international students… but have you taken or are you planning to take Toefl?

@JustStressed Do you think I can get in with 1300 (super scored), 1260 (highest single testing) and 97 (TOEFL). I have 3.89/4.0 GPA. I am an international student who recently moved to the US

Not sure, I’m as naive as you are, but I have seen cases where the SAT/Toefl score was low but due to many other aspects of the application people get admitted. So as long as you show excellence in EC’s and essays, as well as recommendations, you might still have a fair chance; however, at the same time don’t forget how competitive a school like Cornell is! Good luck!

I think my EC’s and essays are pretty good. I think moving to the US and winning some awards here in my EC’s gives me a boost.

Another international student here - Myanmar this time

SAT 1: 770 (Maths) 740 (English)
SAT 2: 760 (Chem) 770 (Physics) 780 (Maths)
TOEFL: 114

I’m really worried about how my Myanmar grades are going to translate to US stuff. But my main SAT marks are great. So… here’s hoping!

Hey @laurclassof2021 , I thought I’d comment since our stats are very similar!
My cumulative GPA is only a 3.4 with 35 ACT…but unlike you I haven’t been tested for ADHD (maybe I should consider it lol)
Which school are you thinking of applying to?

Hope we get in!

Anyone have any insight on if it’s very difficult for someone who is very humanities-leaning to get into Cornell? I had always wanted to apply but a student at my school said that since all of my extracurriculars/awards/honors are related to either gov, politics, or writing, and my two recs are from a lang arts and history teacher, i would likely be at the bottom of the applicant pool.

@apandactivism whoever you talked to couldn’t be further from the truth. Cornell looks for fit. If you are applying to a humanities-related major, you will actually be at an advantage. The admissions office will evaluate you in the context of your interests and your prospective major. Good luck!

Hey guys, i was filling up the cornell app in the CommonApp portal and was surprised that Cornell, unlike other schools, didn’t ask whether i was applying for financial aid? I’m an international applicant not requiring aid. Since they r need aware for internationals, how can i let them know that im not applying for aid? Also, did u guys get the financial aid question in your cornell app? Thanks!

Hi, I just read your comment/advice. I am a last minute kid. I am in the midde of applying to Cornell major
In East Asian studies. But I am not just going to study that alone; I want to combine it with other areas like international relations, international business etc. will my chance be significantly reduced if I put that in?
What are my chances to get in Cornell foe East Asian studies anyway?
I appreciate anyone’s help and advice at this time.
Thanks!!

I have a question. If all of my application materials (except for my transcript) are in by January 2nd, but my transcript isn’t sent to Cornell until January 5th or so, is my application still considered? Does Cornell have a grace period to get application materials turned in?

@darnedcarrot Just send it in when you can. So long as everything else is sent in, they will still consider your application. You can always call or email the offices if they are open to make sure, but you should be fine.

I had a snowstorm so my school closed for a week before winter-break so I also could not request my transcripts on time. Let this just be a lesson for us to think ahead in the future.

@math3matical No kidding. I requested my transcripts the week before we went on break, assuming that my counselor would check on requests, but apparently they never did. Needless to say, I’m definitely going to think ahead in the future.

@darnedcarrot your transcripts should be included with your common app submission. Normally, counselors upload them when they fill out the school report/counselor report.

If you’re referring to the mid-year report, most colleges understand that it is not available until after break.

@DryMango I’m referring to the transcript… I sent in a request but it looks like it won’t be fulfilled until after break. That’s why I was wondering if Cornell has a grace period to get all application materials turned in.

Hi! I was just wondering if CALS looks at SAT subject scores even though they are not required (:
Thanks!!!

anyone applying to human ecology ?

Yeah, I would guess they would look at them. What major are you going in as? I’m also applying to CALS, Ag Sciences. Only sent in ACT scores.
