Cornell v. Binghamton

where you denied what? look, i'm not trying to start an argument or something, but you posted a false rumor as fact, and bad-mouthed a college based on the false rumor...why not just admit you were wrong, and just not post that again? that way no one who reads this thread will get the wrong idea and get a false impression of a college they might wanna apply to

find where i disputed that many people believed nyu to be depressing. If you can't, then again, step off. Nothing "ironic" there. I was just going off of what a good friend always tells me and what i've heard from students there, which probably isnt good evidence, so if that is wrong than I am certainly open to that, although I don't think a link to a poster on cc means much. Nevertheless, that doesn't justify you and hermanns making it into a personal vendetta. If you wanted to dispute my original point with a degree of civility, then fine. But making it personal by bringing nyu into it and for hermmans to assert the "inferiority" of my school (wthout going into his background), is infantile

haha that's the thing, you admit that nyu is depressing, but here you are bashing another college for having a high suicide rate, when that's not even true? it's hardly personal for us to bring up nyu...I mean I go there as well. I thought his "inferiority" comment was out of line as well, but whatever...we're dragging out an argument that has nothing to do with the OP's question.

christ why won't you leave it alone

im not bashing it, i brought it up in response to viola because s/he said they didnt like their current school because they found it depressing. Understand? Why was nyu ever relevant to the discussion? At least until you decided to bring it up.

And as a secondary point, there are aspects of nyu (ie, its location) which are an attraction for most people (me) and repel some others (hermanns) and make them "depressed."

"wait and youre applying to cornell?!?!?!"

Seems pefectly reasonable to me. I knew a number of transfer students from Binghamton when I was there, and other Binghamton students who tried unsuccessfully to transfer there. The stated reasons seem perfectly sound, typical really.

"Cornell is notorious for being one of the more depressing colleges on earth"

This is absolute nonsense, absurd really. Cornell has one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. It does have demanding academics, if that's what you mean; but OP was quite explicitly referring to the nature of the physical environment.

"...it has an alarmingly high rate of suicides"

As others have pointed out, this is unfounded urban legend, commonly propogated only by people who themselves have no in-depth familiarity with the university.

"...the gorges have nothing on binghamton..."

Perhaps, to someone who is completely blind. And only in that case. This comment could lead one to infer that you have not visited these two campuses.

"I've never heard of diversity defined in terms of majors??? I mean, if that's your definition of diversity, then yea I guess but then so are most schools"

No, in fact most schools are nowhere near as diverse, academically, as Cornell is.

"...in terms of ethnic and socio-economic diversity, its pretty much standard for a school of its prestige.."

Three of Cornell's seven undergraduate colleges offer reduced tuition for in-state students; this results in a degree of economic diversity that, actually, is not standard for a school of its prestige.

Moreover your comment missed the point, since OP was considering diversity relative to a specific state school with near 100% NY State students, not to some generic "school of its prestige".

Apparently, an inferior education leads to stubbornness and an inability to abandon a moot point. Yikes.

^^^inferior education? may i ask where you go, buddy?

anyways, rather than restate what ive already stated then restated again to stargazer through pm and continue to distract from the OP, i might just do the following:

apply to this little school with now two straight semesters of a 4.0 from a t-20 LA and transfer to cornell myself to investigate

WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME CC?

yes yes, insert smart comments here, like everybody wasnt expecting it

best of luck to everybody, merry merry belated christmas and such

I don't think anyone posting here has been provided with "an inferior education", at the collegiate level anyway. IIRC, dbj is fortunate to attend one of the outstanding LACs in this country. I can absolutely vouch that the education provided there is far from "inferior".

LOL, it amuses me greatly to see people argue on here. Jeez... come Fall '09, some of us will have transferred to our dream schools and some of us will not have. We don't make much difference to one another, but let's at least be civil. I'm not always fond of Dufflebag's advice, but I just let it pass by if I don't like it. He is realistic. Take what he says or leave it. Don't start insulting one another, that doesn't help anybody.
