I am looking to work in IB in NYC after graduation and have to decide between three schools for my undergraduate degree:
Cornell for the School for Hotel Administration, but I plan on transferring to Dyson either my second semester, or second year. (Does anybody know how easy this would be?)
NYU Stern
UVA, I will be applying to transfer into McIntire sophomore year
I also got into Carnegie Mellon Tepper Business School, but I do not know if I should even consider it.
Money is not an issue because they are around the same price for me. Also, lets say ten years down the line will it make a difference if I have an Ivy like Cornell as my alma mater over any of these other schools?
Are your future transfer plans guaranteed? If not, I would strongly consider either NYU or Carnegie Mellon, both excellent options. You can always go to Cornell or UVA for your MBA.
If you want to work in NYC, then you should go to NYU. You’ll get to know NYC better, and they’ll probably want to hire NYU kids. You’re obviously a very qualified student if you got into Cornell, so you’d probably be top of your class at NYU. That’s the choice I’d go with.
When you apply as a Senior, you can be admitted (about 100) denied, WL or guaranteed a transfer your 2nd year if you go elsewhere freshman year and take the required first year courses.
I think you need to do some research into the internal transfer rates at Cornell into Dyson (which seem to be very low) from comments here; and 2) the curriculum as well as what types of jobs graduates of the Hotel Admin. school can expect to get. If you are not happy with the curriculum and employment options available at Cornell’s Hotel Admin school then I’d say Stern is an excellent option if you like the environment of NYU (ex. no traditional campus etc.)
And regarding post #5 I think the poster means applicants who are offered an guaranteed transfer option to Dyson for their sophomore year as opposed to students who start at Cornell and are looking for an internal transfer.
Hotel or Stern.
At Hotel, you’d get essentially a management curriculum anyway, so there’d be no need to transfer to AEM (and banks would recruit from all colleges of Cornell).
You will have the most internship opportunities in NYC if you go to Stern and the best change of getting a job in NYC. My D goes to NYU and all of her friends who are in Stern had jobs lined up by early spring of senior year.
