Currently deciding between the two. My family makes around 180k a year, so we would be able to pay for Stern. However, I would feel bad about paying so much for undergrad if it doesn’t make a big difference in the end. I probably want to work in NY in the future and see this as a long-term investment. However, I also want to have fun in college.
NYU:
-Location
-Better prestige for finance/ibanking. B-school overall has better prestige
-Better recruiting
-More cutthroat
-Full pay (280k in 4 years)
-Have always wanted to live in NYC (but maybe I’ll just wait until after graduation)
-Will be missing out on a real college experience, I guess…
UVA:
-In-state tuition (120k in 4 years)
-I know a ton of people going, including many of my friends
-I know too many people going, which can be a bad thing
-Easier to stand out during on-campus recruiting (?)
-More relaxed environment
-I’ll probably double major in Commerce and Computer Science here
-Better prestige as a whole school
-I did the research and I think I will likely get into McIntire from CAS, so please do not take this factor into consideration.
I already did some research and found that both schools have around the same starting salaries for graduates (but I know this doesn’t include signing bonuses and other benefits). If I wanted to work in NYC in the future and go into a business field, would going to NYU be worth the extra cost in the long term?
@jzeleke I have decided UVA in-state is a better value than Stern, if you are trying to make the same decision
Hey, if you don’t mind me asking what made you come to that conclusion? I’m deciding between UGA in-state and NYU Stern.
@jzeleke UVA McIntire is a top 5-10 undergrad business school, so paying so much more for Stern which is just a little better was not worth it to me. I think for you it might be a little different; if you have the money I’d say go to Stern. Otherwise UGA is perfectly good.
It’s under my knowledge that UVA McIntire’s Undergraduate school does not accept direct admissions from high school, and that you have to apply to the B-School after Sophomore year (and no earlier), which is incredibly competitive. If this is wrong, I’d go for McIntire 100% in your shoes, as it is very prestigious, and while it does not have as good recruiting possibilities, it still has a very strong presence in top firms.
You have to realize, however, that there is a huge difference in prestige between UVA Econ and UVA McIntire, so you should not only weigh price, but your ability and willingness to maintain very high grades in college. (College is FAR harder than high school for the most part, especially at prestigious schools)
@fedorable Thank you for your input! There are no direct admissions to McIntire but I go to an incredibly rigorous magnet high school right now and I’ve talked to people in McIntire who went to my high school and they say in comparison with my experience/being used to the courseload I will have a good chance at McIntire if I work hard.
LOL TJ amiright. I have the same problem either to got to UVA or Michigan
just curious what did you all decide?
