I'm a high school senior who wants to apply ed to one of these schools but cannot decide.

I'm looking to apply for fine arts to Cornell's AAP or RISD. I want to study painting but the reason I'm on the fence is because I don't know if I will change my mind about my major and want to do something not art related.

I have a good grades and scores and a very strong art portfolio with national awards. I love both schools but I don't know which to apply to.

I should also explain that I loved cornell but I'm scared that there is no city and that the art school is not as strong as RISDs. I don't want to be stuck somewhere that might be boring and get depressed but perhaps I have a wrong depiction of Cornell.

But RISD lacks academic diversity and sports like Cornell's ice hockey team. RISD might also lack in college experience like diversity in students and parties.

I know but Im not really interested in the dual degree program because i feel it leaves very little room for study abroad and i think it might be too complicated… even the cross registration programs are limiting…

I just want to know the advantages and disadvantages of attending one university over another and which could provide better opportunities in the future.

Artschool - you will find limited information here regarding Cornell’s art program. It is a very small program, 30 students per year, and there aren’t many who post here.

My D is a sophomore art major at Cornell and loves it. She didn’t consider any art schools only bfa programs at universities. The reason behind that was that she wanted diverse friends and wanted her college experience to be a true college experience. She has really enjoyed the academic classes taken out of the art department and is pursuing 2 minors in areas that interest her.

Have you been to visit Cornell? The campus is beautiful. Yes it does rain a lot and I asked my daughter if that was depressing. She said even when it’s raining it’s beautiful, but maybe that’s because she is an artist!

Anyway there is so much to do on campus you will only be bored if you don’t make an effort to do things.

Risd and Cornell are 2 different experiences and you have to decide which one you are looking for. My D has a friend at risd and she loves it there. It is about finding the right fit for you.

I did visit cornell twice and I absolutely loved it… Though does your daughter ever want the city? And a lot of people say cornell gives little financial aid and charges for lots of amenities … Is it true? Because with art supplies the cost can really add up…
Also, is the art program recognized enough for good job opportunities? I just feel that a risd graduate is valued higher over a cornell aap graduate when it comes to jobs

Cornell AAP has a NYC semester, so if you want the city you can certainly have it. Use the Net Price Calculator to see what your financial aid will be. I have actually heard that RISD gives very little financial aid, so you may be better off at Cornell from a financial standpoint. Yes, IMHO, they do nickel and dime you for certain things, but I am not so sure how different it is from other places. Art supplies are expensive, I think that you will find that everywhere.

As far as which diploma is valued more, I really have no idea. That wasn’t part of our decision making process. At the end of the day it’s a Cornell diploma! I think any diploma is what you make of it.

Does the AAP fine arts department give out any scholarships or extra aid for those with strong portfolios? Sort of like merits?
And, if you wouldn’t mind me asking, what minors is daughter doing?
