How do you tell people that you are attending Cornell without sounding pretentious?

You first make sure the people you’re telling it to goes to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or Stanford.

but goddess…wouldnt those people be pretentious to the OP?

you make it sound less pretentious by talking about FIT and not SAT scores!

Tell them you go to a large school in central NY.

The best way to tell people imo lol:

When you say you’re going to Cornell, do people actually think you’re being pretentious? As in, is it really up there with the “H bomb”? My experiences so far tell me not really…

I don’t think so. If someone asks where you’re going to school, be honest. It’s a huge deal and you should be proud of it.

Or…move west where lots of people haven’t even heard of Cornell. I finally had to give up and say I was going to school in central New York just to make the explanation shorter.

usually goes like this:
me:“oh, i just graduated from my county college”
them:“oh where are you gonna go now?”
me: “oh, well, i just got accepted to cornell, so im probably gonna head up there”

usually a smile and shrug does the trick

I just say I’m going to Cornell. I’m modest about it and say things like “I don’t know how it happened” and people are usually either like oh cool, or omg wow! that’s really great.

Just depends.

D says it was a huge reach for her and she was very happy to be accepted. All true!!

SMILE! and be humble.

Either way-- people are impressed (anout Cornell or college in general). Meaning-- Smile and say “Yeah, I’m happy, or I’m excited, etc.” Or smile when the person does not know Cornell and say “It is a good school in UP state NY that I am excited about.”

i come from the deep south, so when i tell people where i’m going they usually respond with a quizzical brow that immediately is followed by the statement, “Oh, I have never heard of that school.” So it’s really no problem for me to be modest at all.

When I lived in NY…everyone knew about Cornell. In New Orleans, most people outside of my place of employment don’t know about Cornell. It’s never been a big deal. If people make a comment, I say something along the lines of how honored I was to go there and that I really enjoyed my time.
