Cornell's Party Scene

I was wondering if any of you could give me some information about the party scence. Thanks!

It depends somewhat on your desire to be part of the greek system or not. You might be very opposed, very open, or perhaps indifferent to this kind of social life. The greek system is HUGE, with many houses (some of them very beautiful) and each has its personality and distinction--the jock frats, the preppy frats, etc. If you become part of the system, it is easier to form friendships and have your social life structured. If not, your social life can be just as interesting but will be more variable and self regulated. Much of the party scene is centered within the frats, but if you live in Collegetown, the bars and off-campus apartments and houses play a big role.

Most parties during orientation week are in college town, since fraternities aren't supposed to be open, technically... First semester is dominated mostly by fraternity parties. There are usually several parties every weekend and there is always something to do/somewhere to drink. I suggest getting some liquor to pregame with, since Milwaukee's Best (aka beast) tastes like some sort of corrosive acid :) and is unpleasant to drink if you are sober. Generally, there will be parties from Thursday to Saturday. If you enjoy drinking, dancing and hooking up with random people, frat parties will be good for you. If you don't, try collegetown: the parties are smaller and the people generally know each other, since the parties are being held in someone's house. Second semester is dominated by mixers and you might be hard-pressed to find a party if you're not in a fraternity or sorority. When there are open parties, they tend to fill up quickly, since there are far fewer than first semester. Suddenly tons of people will flock to previously unappealing houses in hope of an open party and the brothers will sometimes get power-trippy and act like total tools. People will cut you in the line you've been waiting on for a half an hour to get in, offering a comforting "Life isn't fair" as they walk in before you because your shirt wasn't low-cut enough, or you happened to be a guy (suckers). In April there are pledge parties at frats, so that will be an opportunity for you to find some parties if you aren't in a house. Parties pick up again at the end of second semester as mixers die down. Um, basically, if you enjoy getting drunk/debauchery/all the other reasons people claim to join houses for...like comradery, philanthropy and other such crap, join a house.

what are some of the fraternities to stay away from, like the ones which are notorious for drugs or the bottom of the barrel for all of Cornell.

I think you're mistaking in associating houses that do drugs with the bottom of the barrel. I assume you have some sort of prejudgement of/aversion to drugs, because they're bad, mmm kay.

I'm not going to make a post of awful things about all the houses, but if you really want to know, send me a private message.

Ya I don't see myself joining a frat but I still like to party. Hopefully it will all work out...

How hard is it to get liquor/beer for your dorm room for pregaming? Do most freshman use fakes or get seniors to get it for them?

It's not hard. You'll probably meet somebody who will be able to get you stuff. Make friends with frat guys. They're older and have alcohol.

It's really easy to get booze, just make older friends, like mercury said.

MUnited: As an officer in a fraternity I have access to information such as lists of every fraternities average GPA. Now I'm not saying that GPA is a direct correlation for anything, but it seems to be the kind of thing important to you.

Of the top 5 house GPA's for Spring 2005, I know from first hand experience that at least 3 of them (ZBT, Sigma Alpha Mu, Beta) have many (not all) members who enjoy their recreational drugs.

Are fakes used often though? Right now, I'm deciding whether to buy a scannable fake for $100+. Is it worth it?

As a freshman, I think more of your time will be spent in parties than at the bars, but an ID is nice to have. Try to get one from a 21 year-old you or a friend might know instead.

are there certain sororities and frats that party together the most? like i know at stonybrook (where im transferring from) APD and SIS always party together and had their formal together. same with ZBT and SDT, and TPA and AXP. is it like that at cornell?

If a d|ck couldn't get hard... off of coca|ne... what would you say to it?

i'd tell it to do more blow

alrighty...

ahah, yeahh...

most freshmen dont see it, but there are a ton of parties going on all week. most frats will have at least some kids doing like beirut then going to bars starting like tuesday. monday night football is big at frats in the fall, so if you meet some older kids, get in on that because its fun. just beacues you go out doesnt mean you should get incredibly hammered on like a monday but its nice to get outside of the dorm.

i would encourage a fake id, but only if its great. it is fun to have one so that you can get drinks at restaurants, sake bomb, or sit outside at college town bagels or in the commons and have a pitcher when its nice out. most freshmen dont go to bars, except some girls with older guy friends. its not really fun unless you know people there, and most fresh dont have good ids. dunbars is easy to get into but a lot of other bars are prety tough on ids, but if it looks real, you have a backup and dont look 12 youll be ok. dont buy at wegmans or northside liquor.

if you go out on mon-weds get your work done early, some kids are idiots about that, and def dont go out every night because youll get burnt out/wont do well. frat parties are really the big scene fresh year, espec with the big open parties in the fall. thursday-saturday are the best nights as a first semester freshman. join a frat, its fun, and you can do incredibly well academically especailly if you are organized and have some self control, so you dont have to be in the frat with the top gpa. in reality youll join the one were the kids are like you, not the one that has the best stats.

to answer another question, yes most sororites have houses they chill with regularly. obviously not every girl in the house is in love with the same frats, but it usually goes like this, jappy sororities chill more often with jappy frats, preppy sororities chill more often with the athlete houses/ preppy frats, etc. howeever, you can find girls from any sorority at any frat, on weeknights and more low key nights htey usually just go to where their guy friends are, so they go to where the people are most like them. i feel like everyhone is touchy (including myself) about bringing up frat stereotypes and names because there are so many, and people dont want to be biased or turn people off before you get there.
