How does the corporate scholarship notification work? I found out that I'm a finalist through my principal, but will it come with our finalist letter mailed home or at a later date? Also, how does the $2500 scholarships that NMF foundation hand out work? Thanks!

Congrats!!!

3 years ago, my son received a certificate in the mail about his corporate scholarship.

It gets credited to his school bill at the beginning of each semester.

I don’t know how the one-time NMCorp ones work…probably similarly.

Are you eligible for a corporate one? They’re usually better than the NMCorp ones. The corporate ones are often for 4 years.

THank you m2ck! Yes, I am actually eligible for two corporate scholarships, so I was wondering how they worked. Did your son get the certificate with or after the finalist letter, and if so, how long afterwards?

Also, any info on the NMF sponsored $2500 and when those are made?

Thanks for your help!

First of all, you’re only allowed to accept one “official” NM scholarship - so if you take one corporate one, you won’t be eligible for any others - including the NMCorp one.

So, if one corporate scholarship is for more money, then accept that one.

The exception is this…

You can accept a corporate NM scholarship and a college NM scholarship if the college one has an “unofficial” portion. For instance, my son accepted the corporate one for $2500 per year, and he also accepted the Alabama big scholarship (tuition, housing, etc), and he only had to give up the $1k portion which was Bama’s “official” NM portion.

Does that make sense? I’m not sure if I explained that clearly.

Congratulations on being a finalist! I was wondering if you know if all of the corporate National Merit scholarships notify finalists at the same time or do the corporations announce this when they choose? My son received an application a while ago (I don’t remember when) stating that he was being passed to the next level for consideration for a National Merit Corporate scholarship. I didn’t think we would hear anything until March. I was just wondering if he might still be in contention or does this mean he’s out?

M2CK, that makes perfect sense, and I do realize that I can only get 1 NM scholarship. My question was about the notification (if/when letter or news arrives)…

Davenmame-- so they sent a letter to your son saying he got to the next level of the corporate? Do you think this is supposed to happen for all corporate ones?

Thanks again!

May 31 Deadline for NMSC to receive reports of college choice for identifying the final group of candidates for college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards 2010

These dates are NOT obviously perfect, because the Jan 24th date isn’t true at all. Rejection letters went out the first week in January. That suggests that the selection process happened in December.

Mike - Yes, It was postmarked Novmber 23rd. It included an application “Special Scholarship Application” for him to submit. I think it was labeled “Special” since he is homeschooled. The letter did not use any teminology such as semi-finalist or finalist. It simply stated that “… you are among a group of high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the 2010 competition for a Special Scholarship sponsored by the corporate or business organization identified,…” He hasn’t heard anything from them since then. Did you have to complete an additional app. back in Nov., Dec.? Do you think since he hasn’t heard anymore that he is still in the running? I guess I’m still hoping.

Mom2collegekids - were those dates for regular National Merit Semi-finalists or the corporate scholarships?

Those dates have to do with finalists.

Semi-finalists are announced in Sept.

My son received a 4-year corporate award last year. In his case, NM called him during the first week of March to encourage him to complete his college choices (he had not done so). The woman he spoke with indicated that he was being considered for a ‘rather nice’ scholarship. The scholarship offer came through around the end of March - about the 25th if I remember correctly.

Also, if a student is awarded corporate money, the student can change school designation after deposits are due in May. The NM site gives details on corporate awards; some are guaranteed, some are competitive. My daughter’s corporate award is sent about a month after her room and board are due, so she gets a check from the university each semester.

that happened to my son a few years ago. That’s how we learned that our son could accept the corporate scholarship $2500 for 4 years and also accept the university scholarship and only have to give up a very small part of the university scholarship ($1k per year)

davenmame, my D’s corporate scholarship was called “Special” also, and she was not homeschooled. The notification was dated March 19 (2008) and had a reply deadline of March 26. Your S should still be in the running if all his paperwork was submitted.

My H (the employee of the corporation) had to register her for the scholarship around the time she took the PSAT (2006), and she did have an application to complete in early Dec (2007).

^^

Very true about the early registration for corporate scholarships at some companies. My H had to register our boys in October of their junior years. Many parents aren’t even aware of this opportunity at that point.

Has anyone been notified of a corporate scholarship yet? Maybe it’s not until later in March, but I was jw. thanks

thank you! :)

Spoke with NMSC today, Northrop Grumman awards are being mailed out today :)

My son received notification today in the mail that he is receiving a National Merit Corporate Scholarship from SAIC.
