Corporate scholarship notification?

In post #48, I had mentioned all the companies that give aid which does not require the parents to be employees. Here is what I had posted for PPG
*
PPG Industries Foundation–68 awards—40 awards for children of employees of PPG Industries, Inc. and its subsidiaries; 28 awards for residents of communities where PPG has operations.*

zzdumdumzz,
Obviously PPG has an operation near or in your community. I would suggest that you should write a thank you note to PPG in appreciation for their support of your community, if your letter from NMSC does not already suggest that.

Also, the NMSC $2500 awards are supposed to be mailed out on the March 25. But you cannot get both, the $6000 is better.

I assume it is $1500 a year that is equal to $6000 over 4 years? or is at $6000 one time or even better $6000 a year.

My apologies, I did not read zzdumdumzz’s other postings, where he has answered my question.

Again I do not believe that the $2500 NMSC scholarship has been mailed. I had called them a few days back and they told me it had not been mailed, thought corporate ones had been. They gave me the date of 25th.

zzdumdumzz’s: That’s great! Another question…

It would be correct to assume that you did not apply to a university offering a scholarship for a NM Finalist?

Greenery- Yes, I believe that none of the ivies offer scholarship for NMF unfortunately.

Thanks zzdumdumzz. Considering different posting, we probably can assume the NMC is notifying the awards in the following order:

1 - Corporate scholarships
2 - $ 2500 Award
3 - Universities scholarships

Any information about this statement?

(2010)

March 10 - NMSC begins mailing corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships offers to winners at their home addresses

March 25 - NMSC mails offers of National Merit $2500 Scholarships

April 28 - NMSC begins mailing offers of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards (see note on page 3 of Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists)

…according to the Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists Brochure

To add to stockmom123, the college-sponsored scholarships are mailed in batches, so those who get it mailed on April 28 should have a college choice before March 1st. If you have already given a choice by do not want that choice reported, then contact NMSC right away.

http://www.nationalmerit.org/Merit_R&I_Leaflet.pdf

*Schedule specific to college-sponsored awards:
March 1 through May 31, 2010: A Finalist who has reported a sponsor college as first choice by March 1 will be included in the first group referred to that institution for scholarship consideration. Periodically NMSC will notify sponsors of additional Finalists who have reported (by May 31) the college or university as their first choice.
April 28, 2010: NMSC will begin mailing college-sponsored Merit Scholarship offers.

NOTE: If NMSC receives notification of a change in college choice from a Finalist after
mailing a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship offer to that student, the Finalist cannot be
offered another college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award. This applies even if the new
choice of college is one that also sponsors Merit Scholarship awards. Therefore, a Finalist
who has previously reported a sponsor college as first choice but is uncertain about it may choose to notify NMSC that he/she is now “undecided”; such notification must be received at NMSC, via mail or by fax to (847) 866-5113, before April 28. The Finalist can subsequently report a firm college choice that NMSC receives by May 31.

May 31, 2010: Deadline date for NMSC to receive reports of a sponsor college as first choice. Because it is necessary to end the competition in a timely manner, only college choice reports that NMSC receives by May 31 will be used to identify the final group of candidates to a college or university that sponsors awards*

S hasn’t gotten his corporate award from Xerox Foundation yet. I am starting to get nervous. Has anyone received their award from Xerox yet? It seems pretty late if they started sending the awards out on March 10th.
I called last week and they wouldn’t tell me anything!

Do you know how many Xerox awards are given? Do they award one to the NMF child of every employee?

I’m confused. Is everyone eligible for the $2500 scholarship no matter what is placed on the college list? There is a good chance my D is not going to a NMF school (Williams) but not has Davidson as a number one choice and they are a NMF nominating schools. Will this have an effect on getting a $2500 at large scholarship?

This is what is says in the NMSQT Student Guide:

‘The Xerox Foundation–Every Finalist who is the child of an employee of Xerox Corporation or a subsidiary will be offered an award.’

So I guess I shouldn’t worry but I remember someone saying they had to fill out a form for their company award when the student was a Junior. I never did anything like that for S, but I don’t remember ever getting a request to do so either. If we don’t get something today I will call again tomorrow.

Sorry, my post turned out wrong. I meant to say that she will probably go to a school that does not recognize NMF’s with a scholarship. But, she has on her current form Davidson which is a NMF award school. Does this preclude her from one of the $2500 scholarships? Should she change her schools ASAP to first choice a non NMF school (she has yet to make a decision) or undecided? We are not connected with any organization that recognizes NMF’s.

On another note, I am a partner in a small practice. Can we make a tax deductible contribution to her of $1-2.5 recognizing her NMF status?

kttmom: I have heard from other parents on this forum that some companies (Boeing was one mentioned) that the parents work for needs the parent to apply to the corporation in the junior year or something like that for the student to get the NMF scholarship i.e. there is an additional process for some companies which goes through the companies internal systems before NMSC will allocate the scholarship.

I have now idea what the Xerox process is so my suggestion is to call the Xerox HR department in charge of this (or Xerox foundation or what ever the structure is) and ask them is there anything you need to do for them to process the request. It may turn out that Xerox is just taking extra time or may be something else. If NMSC will not give you an answer, Xerox might. Good luck and keep us posted.

GTalum: Not sure what your question is.

Everyone is eligible to be considered for an NMSC scholarship, however there are caveats. The corporate scholarships are announced first and if you (or your child as the case may be) are eligible and receive a corporate scholarship in which case NMSC will probably not award you the NMSC scholarship as they process these scholarships. In your case, as I understand you do not believe that you will be awarded a corporate scholarship.

Now if I understand you right, your question is “If the first choice is a school that awards it’s own National Merit scholarship, does that preclude the student from being considered for the NMSC scholarship of $2500.”

My understanding is “No”. The NMSC makes its decision based on their selection criteria and then inform the school. If the school wants to give its own scholarship, then student has to make a decision as to whether they want the NMSC scholarship or the school NMF scholarship. You also have to remember the school scholarship may have two components: NMF official component and a sweetener. According to NMSC rules a school or corporation is limited in the amount the can give as an NM winner award. So if a school gives $1000 a year plus they waive the tuition, the $1000 a year is the NM award and the tuition waiver is the sweetener. So in that the case the choice is between the $2500 one time or 4 payments of $1000. In both cases you will get the tuition waiver. The advantage of the NMSC award is that it is not school dependent. Let us you received the NMSC award and changed your mind, you can the NMSC to the new school.

Again, this is my understanding and I would suggest call NMSC and phrase the question as I have done it (as I think that is what you are asking) and they should be able to confirm it.

I do not understand the tax deduction question.

Thanks Mazewanderer. That was the question I was asking. This is the problem with working and posting at the same time. It sounds as if we need to change her first choice school as she is undecided. Thanks.

Yeah!! Notice came in the mail today for the Xerox corporate award. We need to send them the CSS profile to determine the actual amount, but there is a minimum $1000/year. And hopefully more!!

GTalum: Unfortunately to be considered for the NMSC $2500 award, a school’s name needs to be on file. So talk to NMSC and see what they say. You cannot have “undecided” as your school choice but you could possibly change to that school that does not give their own scholarships.

Can a corporate scholarship be used at any school – not just the first choice students listed months ago?

I believe so, yes. You do need to notify NMSC that you have changed your first choice. There is a post card or call them directly for detailed info.

yes corporate scholarships and NMSC scholarships can be changed. There is a deadline, I believe as they have to wrap up things. Call them and change it right away if you know the school now.
