Are the corporations referred here are Dad and Mom’s place of work? Are there any Corporations that offer scholarships to NMF without requiring parents to be employees? Thanks.

Nearly all corporate scholarships are awarded to children of employees. We had to register our sons during the fall of their junior years.

We never had to fill out a FAFSA or CSS profile…so, we’ve never submitted one, either.

My older son got the corporate NMF scholarship, and my younger son got the corporate one for kids who made Commended, but not NMF.

okay, I thought of a Q, please. If already have a full tuition scholarship and then awarded a corporate NMSC scholarship, can it be used for R & B?

^^^

Both my kids use their corporate money for their meal plans. They both already have full tuition scholarships.

Greenery - I know my husband’s company, CACI, gives a few scholarships to employees’ kids, and give a few to whose parents do not work for CACI but the kids are NMF. I can’t remember how many are for employees’ kids and how many are for others.

Most scholarships are only for children of employees, few have other criteria. Click on the link below and scroll down till you see the list of sponsors.

http://www.nationalmerit.org/student_guide.pdf

Here are some examples, where you do not have to child of an employee but meet other criteria. It has to be emphasized that most scholarships are for children of employees (I would say more than 90%):

*Chevron Corporation–10 awards—8 awards for Finalists who are children of employees of the corporation and its affiliated companies; 2 awards for other Finalists planning to major in geological and earth sciences/geosciences, geological/geophysical or petroleum
engineering.

caci International Inc–5 awards—3 awards for children of employees of the company and its subsidiaries; 2 awards for Finalists who are planning to major in certain technological and mathematical fields.

Medline Industries, Inc.–2 awards for (1st) Finalists who are children of employees of Medline Industries, Inc.; (2nd) Finalists from the Chicago, IL metropolitan area.

Glenn and Ruth Mengle Foundation–Up to 4 awards for Finalists from three Pennsylvania counties— Clearfield, Elk, and Jefferson.

PPG Industries Foundation–68 awards—40 awards for children of employees of PPG Industries, Inc. and its subsidiaries; 28 awards for residents of communities where PPG has operations.*

daven…mazewanderer…good info. N/A to my k, however good info. Thanks.

I looked at the entire list and these were the ones where (fully or partially) scholarships were given to non family members of the employee or the union member. There may be others and you can see if you qualify for any of these. I would guess 98% of the awards go children of employees. And some in list give it to non employee children as second choice (if an employee’s child is not eligible). Some are based on the location of the student.

For anyone who has past experience with this — do they really not tell you a final award figure until AFTER the May 1st deadline??? Corporate award has a range of 3K to 10K which over 4 years can be a $28,000 swing. Enough to make a significant difference when looking at the affordability of a particular school.

Nat’l Merit Corp 847-866-5100

Call them and ask. :)

I would expect when they give you a corporate award, they will notify you of the amount. This may not apply if there is a means component in addition to the merit component. Call NMSC and explain to them your situation and they may give you a hint. Also, talk to your corporation and they may have some guidelines they have give NMSC and they can share that with you.

Does accepting a corporate award as a National Merit Finalist categorize a person as a “National Merit Scholar” or does that person have to receive the $2500 award to carry that title?? :)

Anyone who receives an award…NMCorp, Corporate, or College is a National Merit Scholar.

That’s great. Thanks!

Omgosh, I got a letter in the mail yesterday that says that PPG Foundation is giving me $6000 for my college which isn’t a sponsor college (Univ of Penn)! I can’t believe it, none of my parents companies are on the corporation sponsor list either nor do any of my relatives work for PPG so when I didn’t get the $2500 National Merit money, I thought I had no chance!

Wow…congrats and what a surprise!!!

Now, will UPenn reduce your aid by that amount? Or will they let you use that towards EFC? Many schools will not let you use it towards EFC. They’ll simply reduce the aid you get.

Yep, we thought of that too, but since the scholarship is spread out to 4 years, so 1500 a year, it will all go towards the student expected pay which for me was $5500 a year which I was suppose to get by working. Thus, the scholarship will not affect Penn’s aid. However, the catch is that if the amount goes over $5500 of student contribution, any extra scholarship will reduce Penn’s aid. Therefore, the scholarship being spread out over 4 years is extremely helpful.

Ahh…good! Glad to see that your expected work will be reduced to $4k. That is a more manageable amount. $5500 is a bit much to expect a student to earn every year in a bad economy.

zzdumdumzz -Congratulations. I have some questions, you said: " so when I didn’t get the $2500 National Merit money"

Did the NMC announced who received the $2500?
How PPG Foundation knew about you? Did anyone apply on your behalf?

Greenery- No one in my school had any info about the $2500, but my dad’s co-worker’s son claims to have received the $2500 about two weeks ago? He told me that the $2500 National Merit Money was already sent out, so I can only trust his words? Still, he could be wrong.

Also, for the corporate money, I was really confused too because I’m pretty sure no one applied on my behalf, however, I looked more into it. Apparently the Corporation sponsors are not all for children of employee. For a few selected ones, they give the scholarships to people who meet other criteria.

PPG Industries Foundation68 awards40 awards for children of employees of PPG Industries, Inc. and its subsidiaries; 28 awards for residents of communities where PPG has operations.

So I guess PPG Industries has operations in my community making me eligible and I am pretty sure that PPG found out about me through the whole National Merit process which disseminates the qualified applicants’ information to these corporations.
