Corrected FASFA and Award Amounts

I recently completed a corrected FAFSA. The new award letter stated that I received an amount for Summer 2010, Fall 2010, Winter 2011 and Spring 2011. I have completed the summer and have about 3 weeks left on fall semester without receiving the federal pell grant, but the corrected fafs and award letter states a federal pell grant amount that I would receive. My question is do they retro pay you the amounts that the award letter states.

Yes, it is possible to receive payment for federal grants after the semester has ended, but within the same academic year (idk what happens if the academic year ends without the payment being processed). Have you followed up with the FA office at your school on this? What are they saying? Make sure they’re aware that you updated your FAFSA so they can update your FA package!

When you made your correction, were you selected for verification? In my experience, many students who make FAFSA corrections that cause them to change from not being Pell eligible to being Pell eligible often are selected for verification after the changes are processed. Is there a “*” next to the EFC on your Student Aid Report? If so, you have been selected for verification by the processor. You will need to complete verification before the Pell grant will be paid to you (and before any further disbursements of financial aid will be made). Call your financial aid office to find out what is what.

Any Pell payments made after the end of a completed term must be made based on the number of credits completed … so dropping classes will affect Pell payments made after the term has ended. If you are selected for verification you will want to get your info on file before the current term ends.

I spoke with the FA office because I needed to do a correction since I have been unemployed since November last year and the Fasfa was looking at last year. I advised that even though I got a grant for the tuition it was not enough to cover the books. She then had me do a special circumstance hardship. The letter stated that I amounts that I got for the Hope Grant and now includes the Pell Grant Amounts. I have completed Summer quarter and about to end Fall Quarter and start Winter quarter. I just received the letter last week and was wondering if it was retro since it did say that I was eligible for the amounts on all four quarters. It is for the 2010 - 2011 school year. I decided to go back to school full time since I havent found a job yet.

Since I did a special circumstance she used my termination letter from my job and the letter that I got from unemployment regarding my fininaces to replace last years amount for me.

Okay, so your school did the corrections. That’s good. From the information you have given, my guess is that the money should pay to your account retroactively. I would bet that summer and fall will probably be paid to your account within the next week or so. The school had to send out the changes, and they have to wait for them to be received back from the processor. After that happens, it shouldn’t take too long for the aid to pay. If you have any questions, just ask your financial aid office.
