Could I get into Lawrenceville, Kent, Salisbury, or Avon old farms

Hello. As of this year, I will be a male 10th grader at a very well regarded private school in northern New Jersey. I am applying as a repeat sophomore. I was wondering if someone could give me some feedback on and how my chances are of, hopefully, getting accepted into a top prep schools. Some examples would be Salisbury, Kent, Avon Old Farms and Lawrenceville. Preferably, I would like to attend Lawrenceville or Salisbury, but, all four of the schools listed above are good.

Here's what I do:

SPORTS:

Coxswain of freshman crew at school (one of the top teams in the country)
Center of jv team and club team (both among the best in nj)
On the jv golf team (shoot around 85)

MUSIC:

I've played violin for many years and here are some accolades:
Played in NJ HS regional orchestra as a freshman
Interlocken music festival
Played at Carnegie Hall 3x (solo)
Won the international concerto computation 2x
Played in many orchestral groups for benefit concerts (for Haiti, sandy, aids in Swaziland ect.)
Chamber experience
My teacher works at the Juilliard pre college and mannes pre college
I am currently working on paganninis 24 caprice

CLUBS:

Future doctors club
Concert master of school orchestra as freshman
Math Olympiad
Student council leader

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

Peace for paws foundation helper
1 week mission trip with church
Volunteer at local share house

Summer:

Stanford science program
Harvard earth science program
People to people (invite)
Multiple music festivals (interlocken)
I go to Nantucket and Maine most years

In terms of my scores, I am taking the SSATs this year. Last year I got in the 85th percentile and will probably get in that same range.

In my academics I get all As. In 8th grade I got a couple of Bs, but not in high school. I am in all the honors or advanced honors classes and go up in Latin. I got 3 gold medals on the national Latin exam (one perfect score). I excel in math and science, but I like to read.

To summarize, I am applying to kent, Salisbury, Avon old farms, and lawrenceville. I know people from kent and Salisbury (which might boost my chances). Thank you for your input.

Well, you asked me to chance you, but to be honest I have no idea how prep school applications work. All i can tell you is that your sports and music experience is great, but I would like to see a little bit more leadership roles in the clubs area.

For those schools I’d say you will be extremely competitive, except Lawrenceville is probably more selective than the others on your list. You should definitely apply, though, because you appear to have the creds to fit in there.

BTW, I have a very close friend who attended Salisbury and remains infatuated with the place. He raves about it constantly. Won’t shut up about it, actually.

You have great stats, you should have a decent shot at all of the schools

Are you applying financial aid or not? This will make a huge impact

Thanks guys
If I can, I might for Salisbury or Avon
I might apply to loomis instead of Avon
I also forgot to mention I started the chess club the first day of freshman year (I am the president) and I’m in the mission club
If anyone could give me advice to narrow down my choices

Our son attends Avon Old Farms. All the schools you mentioned are great, Salisbury and Avon are both all boys schools so they offer a different experience. I went to a large co-ed prep school decades ago but we chose Avon for our son for a few reasons. Like many parents, we are coming around to the idea of single sex classrooms. Study after study supports the academic and emotional benefits of this and we knew it was the right choice for our son. Also, we were impressed by Avon’s emphasis not only on athletics and academics but character development and camaraderie. This was really refreshing and not something we picked up on at other schools. Avon seems to attract ambitious, well rounded, smart, normal boys. It’s competitive but not a pressure cooker environment–this was very important to us. It’s also a small school–for us that was a huge selling point but it depends on what you’re looking for. Some kids thrive at larger schools. Best of luck!

This thread is old but I wanted to add that if you row ( or cox ) you can’t go wrong with Salisbury ( if you’re a boy) , Kent or Lawrenceville. All three schools did well very, very well last Spring and competed at the Henley Royal Regatta last week. At the HRR- Lawrenceville didn’t do as well as Kent ( who raced against college boats in the Temple Cup ) and Salisbury ( who did exceptionally well and gave Eton a run for their money ) but all three schools ( without question) would give anyone who rows ( or would like to row ) a world class experience.

If you would like to learn more go to the school websites and take a look at the programs. If you’d like to see a crew in action at the HRR you can go to HRR 2015 and watch the races from last week on You Tube.

Also- checkout the Crew’s Instagram and twitter accounts … You can get a good feel for a program and school this way .

Salisbury came in fourth at the Head of the Charles last weekend
