I also have a recomendation from the President of the West Point Society. I am a born leader and would love to go to this school. I am sorry if this was long but I believed this needed to be thorough. My High School doesn't have a JROTC Program. Do I have a chance?

Of course you have a chance, pretty much everyone does. You look like you’ll have a good chance too, though your GPA could be higher.

It’s fine if you aren’t in JROTC, that’s counted the same as any other extracurricular activity.

My advice is to read all through the West Point website, catalog, etc. and follow their advice. Apply to the SLS your junior year, and Boys State too. Boys State looks really good on any college application.

Keep working hard.

Honestly, no one can rate your chances, but the best we can do is point out what is missing. Your are currently a sophomore in h.s. and won’t participate in any sports until your senior year? At most schools I am familiar with you can’t join varisty football in only your senior year and be more then a benchwarmer, perhaps your program is different. At least that is how I read you resume. Being physically fit is a BIG part of all service academy programs. Your competition will be varsity level athletes who have successfully performed all during h.s. or even since grade school, qualifiying/winning state tournaments…etc. I would immediately begin a dedicated workout/training routine and would certainly not wait until senior year to begin participating in physically demands sports (and attempting to excel in them).

Also not sure how one ‘estimates’ their GPA on classes you have yet to complete. Best to quote current stats, rather then future estimates.

I am extremely fit and have worked out a strict workout regiment, but i have decided that i will not be doing football. And how else are you supposed to know what your chances will be by Junior year, without estimating? Rather than post current data i posted the data West Point would see of me as a Junior. I appreciate the willingness to respond, but I wanted an answer, not a critique of my physical abilities(of which you know nothing about). If you don’t have an answer then don’t reply to the post. Also i have just become part of NHS and am a leader in our Freshman Immersion Program for the school. Thank You.

Someone pointed out a reasonable critique and you got all huffy…if you are going into the military, you will have to have a thicker skin than that. And you have no idea what will happen in your junior year so there is no way you can “predict” your eventual GPA or what sports team you will be on. Keep doing your best and check in in a year. And work on how to get that Congressional recommendation.

^^^ ummm correct !!!

The reality is that the people you are competing against for an appointment HAVE been successful leaders/athletes and top of their class in academics. They exceed at ALL of those things. PLAYING and EXCELLING in physically demanding TEAM sports is a big part of what they are looking for. Even if you do work out on your own, being part of a TEAM is what matters at the academy, not just how physically strong your might be. Your current resume is very weak in the sports category by academy standards.

i would first like to apologize for coming off as an arrogant prick, i would also like to apologize for responding in such a rude manner. Here are my current stats, i realize that Varsity Football would be stretch and i have decided that i would not like to participate on the team. But, that does not mean i have poor leadership skills. I have been unable to compete in sports for a year because of major ankle surgery. I was not able to do football, or any sports, my parents are uncomfortable with me doing sports, so as to not jeopardize my potential health down the road, i chose to become an avid leader in extra curricular activities to make up for lost progress with sports. Here are my current stats:

GPA: 3.6(low, i realize, but i can bring it up)
Sports: Volleyball(for now, may do track and field next year, if my parents allow it).

PLAN test gave me estimate of 29-32 on the ACT(but i know i can do better than that).

Leadership Positions: Volunteer leader- Lutheran Home for the Elderly
Volunteer Leader- Bible School in the Summer
Leader of- Freshman Immersion Program
Speech Team- Varsity Officer

Community Service:150 total hours

Clubs/Extracurriculars: Speech Team, Newspaper, Drama Club, Theatre Productions, Intramural Sports Club, National Honors Society

Recommendations: 3 Star General and President of West Point Alumni

As i said before, these are my current stats as a Sophomore. despite the lack of sports, do i stand a chance? And again, i apologize for my immature nature and will make sure that it will not happen again.

Thank You!

It’s always a great sign of a strong character to say when you were wrong and apologize, so kudos to you for recognizing that! Make it a priority to get and stay healthy; a young man from our local high school could not accept his appointment to West Point due to a knee injury.

What are my son’s chances
4.4 GPA
32 ACT
Eagle Scout
Works full time every summer - leadership position
His boss is a retired General who gave him his coin and is willing to recommend

He has autism (very mild - Asperger’s)

None.
Sorry…plenty of other ways to serve your country.

^bruhhhhhh

???

Anything can happen in the next few years. AP CALC may kill your GPA. Also try taking AP Chem. And make sure your injury (which appears to be keeping you from competing) doesn’t appear to inhibit athletic ability. I have a friend who was denied by USNA for a shoulder stinger he had freshman year from football
