Ok so I know there’s a ton of ‘am I going to get rescinded/put on probation, etc.’ from paranoid students but please hear me out. So far it’s always been ‘don’t get a D or F and you’ll be fine’, but I was accepted with a D (in a class that doesn’t pertain to my major, obviously). CMU only stated that I should maintain academic performance, not that I have to raise it–and honestly with the onslaught of senioritis I really don’t think I’d be able to, anyhow. Still, everyone says that if you get a D, you’ll have to write a letter explaining yourself. Does this still pertain to my situation?
Additionally, could I possibly get rescinded due to poor IB scores/failing to pass the diploma due to TOK/CAS/EE requirements?
I’m not really that scared because getting rescinded happens a lot less than what is generally believed (hopefully), but I’d still like to get some input on this. Thanks!
The easy question - you will not have an acceptance rescinded for “poor IB scores.” I assume you are planning on completing you TOK/CAS/EE requirement; failing to do so would be problematic.
The harder question - at a minimum, I would think you would be asked for an explanation if one of your final grades is a D, for no other reason than CMU wants to ensure you can handle the workload in college.
@skieurope I suppose, but wouldn’t they have asked about the grade when they accepted me?
Thanks about the IB scores insight though! And yeah, I’m definitely planning on completing it, but I guess my IB coordinator has really successfully instilled that sense of fear in me, yknow?
Was that grade in a senior year course? If so, then yes, I’m surprised that they did not ask or mention improving it as a condition for acceptance. But I would not take that as a sign that you can just let it go.
@skieurope It was, which is why I was pretty surprised too. Still, the thing I’d hate the most is to essentially get my offer rescinded with the same grade I was accepted with, without even a mention of needing to bring it up. Hopefully it won’t come to that, but just thinking about it absolutely crushes me. Would I pretty be ok if I manage to bring the grade up to a C or so?
If you get a C, it’s fine. And that would be what I’d strive for. If a C in not achievable, I’d drop the class (which you would also have to explain)if that’s an option.
If the D was on the transcript you submitted, which was used for admission consideration, then I suppose you are good to go. But I’d certainly try to up it to at least a C to be sure.
If your application said you were working towards an IB diploma and now you’re going to fail to complete the requirements for it, that would be a more troublesome issue, IMHO.
@RichInPitt Yeah, honestly out of the two? The IB one is more terrifying to me… And Yeah, I’m definitely going to try to get that grade up to a C, hopefully it works out. Fingers crossed!
