So as AP and IB test are coming to a close... I think a lot of people are fully aware that they will be graduating quite soon.

I think a lot of us are in a position where senioritis has lowered our GPA slightly. I also know a lot of us are wondering what things are permissible and what other things will lead to an automatic rescind letter. Thus this post.

Post your questions and answer other people's questions.

From what I can tell, from hours of scouring CC, is that one C isn't going to lead to a rescind.
D's and F's will probably get you in trouble
AP scores do not matter

But I do have a question that I'd like answered.

I've been in the IB diploma program and was wondering if failing to get the diploma would lead to a rescind?

I’ve seen this question a few times relating to so many situations on the board, and have gotten a few PMs about it, too. So here’s my final verdict on this scenario:

Things that are not permissible:
- Getting caught with Monica Lewinsky
- Protesting Andrew Carnegie on Forbes Avenue
- Deciding to pick up a light cocaine habit and then getting in trouble
- Trying to proposition Jared L. Cohon
- Getting mostly F’s and D’s
- Leaving school

Things that are permissible:
- Slipping grades
- Failing to get an IB diploma
- Scoring badly on your AP exams

Honestly, they don’t care and probably won’t even see/check whether you got your diploma or not. The only scenario in which they will see your IB grades would be if you had sent them in to determine whether you’d get credit/placement for a course at CMU.

I concur-- one C no biggie, even two Cs, probably not, although you can put a risk any seriously highly coveted CMU or external scholarships.
Fs you will be rescinded-- unless you have a darn good reason (medical,??) Ds can get your rescinded or on probation perhaps.
If you were a straight A student and pull a bunch of Cs and Ds, someone might notice…but reality, unless it’s all Ds and some Fs, it will not catch anyone’s attention. Your records leave Admissions and go to the HUB…all they look for is a quick glance that you graduated and nothing ridiculous. You’ll even have started the registration process with your home college/department before the HUB even gets your final transcript. The only hold up to registration are your AP scores (available by phone July 1) which actually impact placement if you want to move on to a higher calc course, programming or science, etc.

APs – not relevant to whether you are rescinded…just relevant to what courses you take.

IB – if you’re an international, this can matter.
US citizen- nope-- as long as you graduate high school.

For most people - 2-4 weeks and you’re done with high school-- try not to put yourself in a worse place than you may have already landed – and do whatever you can, perhaps even grovel for extra credit if need be to pull a higher grade in class that could result in an F, D or C.

This is conjecture based on previous years…This year there were record number of applications, stingy financial results for many and WL results were not very good either. So if you got a steaming pot of money vs. being a full-pay student-- there is a remote and cruel possibility that this could actually make a difference. That would be an awful outcome indeed.

Bumping this thread up for all those fearing rescission to ask questions and get help

IS a 70 in AP calc a C or a D
