Hey guys, I had a question regarding my final transcript. I was accepted early decision I and since then i'm not going to lie I slacked off. I received an email two days ago saying that I needed to send them an explanation of my grades (Criminal Justice Honors - D+, AP Calculus BC - C, Physics Honors, C-, AP Psychology - C+) Those were the grades I needed to explain. I'm pretty nervous now, and I sent in my letter. What would I do now?

Wait. Hopefully in your letter you were very honest about your reasons and then promised not to do so when you enter Carnegie Mellon.

I was very honest and I apologized and promised that it would never happen again. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Odd… With all of the posts on here about “It’s OK to get anything short of 2 F’s,” you wouldn’t think they’d ask for an explanation. I’d venture to say that you’re fine and 95% won’t get rejected, but you may be on some sort of academic probation or something if they’re in a really bad mood that day. As long as you sucked up a bit in the letter, you should be fine. I wouldn’t worry too much.

yeah after i saw all the posts saying that i’d be fine, i really didn’t worry and then all of a sudden i get an email saying i need to explain my grades, the ones i listed above in particular or else my acceptance would not be guaranteed. so i asked them instead of denying my admission to put me on academic probation so that i could show the school that i am in fact not a bad student and not a lazy one.

If they take the time to ask you for a reason, you are fine. I’m not even sure if you’ll be put on academic probation but if you are, that may or may not affect grant amount.

Will CMU mind if I have a C+ (79) as a final grade for contemporary literature honors? I just took the final exam yesterday so there’s nothing more that can change my grade.

Carnegie Mellon Office of Admission Ryan, we typically only ask for an explanation of a drop in grades when a student receives a D or F after being admitted.”

What is the policy on rescinding students? Is there a minimum GPA, etc.

Carnegie Mellon Office of Admission Alex, there isn’t a minimum GPA set for rescinding an offer of admission, but if a student receives a D or F after they’ve been admitted the offer may be rescinded. If this is the case, the Office of Admission requests that the student submit a letter explaining the poor grade. Then the decision of whether or not to rescind the offer of admission is made by the college the student has been admitted to.”

So I backtrack my previous statement (i.e owning up to the fact that I was partially wrong - although for most cases on CC you guys really were overreacting lol) and guess that D wasn’t really great, but I’d venture you won’t be rescinded. Good luck and don’t panic. I have some friends here that definitely got D’s senior year.

I currently have a 69 in one of my classes. Will they rescind my offer? I was accepted for ED
Essentially they are concerned that if you continue to slack off you will end up flunking out. A final grade of D could get you rescinded at selective schools.
@aznmonk - why do you have a 69?
