Could it be too late to get into Northwest Community for September 2008??????

I am a bit frustrated today, and mostly mad at myself for not prompting my son to make a housing decision earlier on for Indiana. Although he was accepted in October (yeah!!), he was waiting till he received his notification of his direct admit to Kelley, which he just did (yeah again) before we dealt with housing. When I called the housing office today, and asked if he had a good chance of getting on a business floor in the northwest community, they said that northwest was highly desirable and that it may not be possible. She mentioned that housing requests were coming in since September-maybe these were from upper classmen. Did any current students make housing requests this "late" and get their requests???? I really thought we were ahead of the game................

My son sent in his request for Northwest housing in January and was accepted--but then he did request a single.

If you are willing to pay the slight extra charge for a single, usually these are not in as great demand--and therefore are usually available later in the academic year.

Idyl,
If your son does not get the learning community in Northwest, since he is a direct admit he probably would be able to get into Residence Scholars, which gets you a single room at about $2800, much cheaper than most rooms. It is in Ashton in the Central Neighborhood, which is a good location for Kelley students.

As a direct admit student at IU, I would say that living on an all business floor your freshman year would not be much different than living on a normal floor. In terms of location, I would agree with bthomp1 in that Central neighborhood is the way to go. It is really the shortest distance to the classes, with the exception of maybe Eigenmann being a longer walk. Being in Northwest, many people drink and party all the time, even on weekdays. Which is fun, but I do not think that it would help with grades. And southwest is good if you are an art or music major. Other than that it is kind of weird and far from the B-school.

Thanks everyone for your input. My son has never mentioned the scholars program-is a separate application required??? I somehow don't think my son would like to be in a single so hopefully he will end up in a decent dorm somewhere.......I was really hoping that being on a "business floor" would make a large campus feel a bit smaller for him.
