Hi, I was hoping someone could help guide me in my transfer decision. Im at a small LAC right now and have been doing well academically. I should finish my freshman year with a 3.85ish gpa and 31 credits. Id like to go to a middle sized school with about 4-5000 students, roughly. Id like a top school with good american studies, anthropology, philosophy programs. Im a pretty conservative guy in the sense that I dont party. I definetely want friends but not alcoholic friends. I guess Ive been thinking about Emory U as an option. Is this a good fit? Any advice is greatly welcomed. I got a 27 ACT and 3.6 HS GPA. Please halp me, bc/ it seems my threads never get answered on here. Thanks a lot!

*point... sorry lol

I don't happen to know a lot about your fields of interest, as to which schools have strengths in those areas.

Understanding that you don't want a party life-style, I still don't think you can really rule in or out any given school as a method of avoiding those who overindulge in alcohol. There really are those folks on all campuses and kids who are not over-imbibers at all campuses. It's a matter of finding your group.

There are some guidelines people give - not huge sports scene, not rural and isolated; but even that can vary.

So, that said, I don't see why Emory might not work. IDK about what they expect in the way of ACT scores, but your GPA is good.

Do you have geographic preference? Lehigh comes to mind, Villanova - pretty much any of the traditionally Catholic/Juesuit schools will be strong in philosophy; Tulane, Vanderbilt, Trinity (Ct).

I think Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN would be a good fit, but its considerably smaller than you want (about 2,000 students).

It's really strong in all the programs you mentioned though, and having spent a lot of time at that campus visiting friends, I don't think you would have any problems finding a social circle you would fit into.

Good luck.

Yeah, alcohol is by no means the deciding factor in my decision but in my experience at my current school EVERYONE drinks. I have a lot of friends but none that dont drink haha. im just trying to get away from all that. My school is really small though which is why ive had a hard time. Im sure at a larger school theres a lot of clubs, etc. i could get involved in to meet some more people. I really dont care about location or sports scenes at all. haha it sounds crazy but Im just entirely indifferent. I guess I would like the school to be at least close to an urban area though. I know the ACT isnt great but I figure the GPA will make up for it in most cases. Im mainly looking for that 4000-6000 student body and strong american civ/philosophy programs

thanks barcelonita, ill look into that for sure. it is a little small but still worth looking at

any preferences on location?

nope, just make sure all suggestions are east of the Mississippi :)
