Could someone tell me more about the nursing school?

Hi, I'm a Junior in HS and am looking into different college options. I definitely think that nursing is the career for me, and have been considering Villanova for a while! I have visited and love it, and also love the new nursing building. However, could someone please tell me about the nursing school itself? Like how it is ranked, any ways the Nova nurses are different than other majors (i.e. different dorm buildings?), experiences in the nursing school, opportunities at CHOP (I hope to work in the oncology department there someday), study abroad, etc. Any information would be great!

Other nursing schools I love include Duke, UNC, UPenn, Yale, and Johns Hopkins.

Any feedback would be awesome! Thanks!

Duke’s School of Nursing only offers an ABSN which is an accelerated program for students who already have a bachelor’s degree in another major. They do not offer a BSN program for students directly out of high school.

A student cannot be admitted to the UNC School of Nursing until Spring semester of
their sophomore year of college. Often this admission process is extremely competitive with hundreds of students (some even from other colleges) competing for slots in program.
Villanova offers direct admission to the College of Nursing (i.e. a student receives admission during their senior year of high school). It is very reassuring to enter the Villanova College of Nursing as a college freshman and not have to worry about possibly transferring to another college junior year OR having to switch one’s major as a junior because they were not admitted to the nursing program.

Oh I didn’t know any of that, thanks so much!

When comparing different Nursing programs, you really look into what each school offers. The Yale School of Nursing only offers graduate degrees (no BSN). Penn does offer a direct-entry program like Villanova. Johns Hopkins School of Nursing does offer a BSN, but their website describes the program as a third and fourth year program (not sure if one applies for this sophomore year of college or senior year in high school…website wasn’t too specific).

I’ll try to answer some of your specific questions about 'Nova College of Nursing. Nursing majors do not live in different dorms. Because it’s a direct-entry program, one starts taking Nursing courses the first semester of freshman year. This gives a student a chance to get a feel for the major and decide if Nursing is really for them.

If you are interested in studying abroad, you can do it sophomore year or during the summer (can’t do it junior or senior year because of clinical). All students get a pediatric nursing clinical rotation. Some students get to go to CHOP, but not all.

'Nova offers a direct-entry BSN program in a traditional & beautiful college setting with a new state-of-the art nursing building. It’s located in a lovely suburb of a large city which offers a wide variety of clinical experiences. Good luck with your college search. Hope you find the school that is the perfect fit for you!

this is the 3rd yr the school received an award for being an excellent nursing school. all the teachers are down-to-earth and really try to get to know each student. seriously, they make sure to know your name and schedule tests around other classes and truly make sure you learn the material. they’re all fantastic and most have a great sense of humor. you’ll really enjoy it if you get in the program. there are a bunch of kids and even adults that have gone back after getting a BA/BS from another field trying to get in the program while taking a few nursing classes…
