Hi,
Just wondering, is it possible to transfer from a CC to a 4 year univ after just one semester? I’m thinking of graduating a semester early in 12th grade and spending the next semester at a CC before transferring to a 4 year univ. Thoughts?
Thanks
It depends on the university. They’re going to pay greater attention to how you did in high school after only one semester of college, though.
To me this sounds like a bad idea. Whether it is possible I don’t know. However, admissions is usually more difficult as a transfer student, and financial aid is usually worse as a transfer student. Also note that if you do this then at the time that you are applying to universities the CC grades won’t be available yet. In fact, you would still be in high school at the time that you apply to universities.
You should also remember that the senior year of high school tends to be stressful. Applying to universities is actually a lot of work. Students get to visit schools to decide where to apply, study for the ACT or SAT, take the ACT or SAT, fill out multiple applications with multiple essays, in most cases fill out financial aid applications, sit around anxiously waiting to hear from schools, then in some cases visit schools again to decide where to attend. This adds up to a lot of work and is occurring at about the same time that you would be starting at CC with your plan.
I don’t see any point in graduating a semester early.
I know of someone who graduated from high school, started attending a CC in the fall but applied to transfer to a 4-year LAC that first semester of CC. She was accepted as a transfer student for the spring semester and is now at her 4-year school. I have no idea how common this is or how many schools are amenable to it. She’s the only student I’ve known to do this.
Yes, you can transfer to some colleges & universities after one semester. If that meets with your plans & needs, then go for it !
Some schools–I cannot recall which ones–encourage mid-year entry as a way to ease dorm overcrowding. In the recent past schools have encouraged some new students to start college with a semester abroad.
Look at the transfer requirements of the colleges you want to transfer into. Some require 30 college credits before they will consider a student as a transfer.
Do keep in mind that there is often little to no merit aid available for transfer students. If money is an issue I’d recommend that you do something else that last semester of your senior year of HS (work? volunteer? stay in HS? etc.) and apply to college for the next fall as a freshman.
honestly i think it is best to transfer only after you have completing the prereqs for your department…
Can you attend community college as a dual enrollment high school student? That would be the best way to preserve your eligibility for freshman merit scholarships at a four year college.
Otherwise, I’d try to find something else productive to do with your time that doesn’t earn college credit.
