Taking help from a counselor can be both helpful as well as detrimental, depending upon the student, because the counselor’s views might not end up being what you like. Also, be warned that a counselor does not come cheap. Taking a counselor’s assistance including choosing colleges, fine tuning your profile etc. can easily go up to more than a lakh. Two good ones that I know would be Mamata Sharma at DPS RK Puram (I’ve heard she’s good, 80 odd kids go abroad from that school every year, you could inquire and see if she sees kids from outside the school) and Arjun Seth - check his details out on facebook.

I have a few friends there going to ivies, so my opinion was based largely on their opinion. Besides, I said ‘take all the help you can’, and use CC for the est. You don’t have to blindly follow them!

Not really Tippu, I’ll be more inclined to respect blue’s opinion is he’s from one of those schools. My point was more to clarify that I never meant that you should totally depend on your counselor, you should just make use of whatever good he/she might offer. I myself am from a place where very few people in the city will even know what an ivy league is, so I wouldn’t really want to comment on the quality of counselors inspite of what I’ve heard from friends.

Agree with gary. Most counselors charge a ridiculous amount of money and do little work whatsoever. Talk to people who’ve used their services before jumping into anything. Honestly, you get enough information online these days, and if you have specific questions regarding the University, just send them a mail and they’ll be more than happy to reply. At the end of the day, all your forms go through your school, so you have to keep your school counselor/Principal or whoever signs your forms updated with what you’re doing, no matter how much of a pain he/she is.

If you still think you need help, I’d recommend a visit to USIEF. It’s approved by the US government, so no chance of wrong information, and it has a great library which will come in useful for SAT Prep and college research.

And one last thing, it’s always tough to guage your chance at any university with total certainty. you may be rejected by a school with an 80% acceptance rate and accepted by a school with an 8% acceptance rate. It’s unpredictable…so, collect info online but go with what ultimately feels right for you.

Thank guys…CC is my counselor from now on!

P.S. Blue box DPS RKP and my school are like arch-nemesis when it comes to inter-DPS events and half of my friends are from RKP so I know a lot 'bout your counselor! :P

All DPS counselor are believed to be competent but according to all us dipsites it is wrongly so! :)

From my personal observation I have realised that more Delhi-ites apply to the states for undergrad than Mumbaikars… I hardly know anyone whos applying… There are only 10 outta 150 who are applying from my school…
