Couple of Questions

I’m a high school junior looking into various schools, and I came across Marquette. It looks like a pretty decent school, and I wanted to ask a couple of questions to those familiar with the school. Here they are:

-I’m a pretty good student (#2 in class, 4.0 UW GPA, 33 ACT, extracirriculars, etc.), but Marquette’s “list price” is fairly high. My college savings aren’t bad, but aren’t great either, so what kind of scholarships would I possibly be offered?

-How does the school compare to DePaul, Loyola, Butler, etc? I’ve visited DePaul and I really liked it, and I know Loyola is a great school. Is Marquette on par with these schools, especially in business (actuarial science, accounting)?

-What is the school’s atmosphere like? Is Greek life dominant (not a fan, but not a turn-off either)?

If anyone can provide some answers, that’d be great!

With your stats I would guess you would receive a merit scholarship (Pere Marquette award) of around $18,000). I have two daughters that were accepted to Marquette. The oldest chose to go to UW Madison and the younger is still deciding. Both girls have many friends at Marquette or are looking at the school. The friends that are there seem to like it a lot. For what it’s worth Marquette is ranked higher in the USNWR rankings than either Loyola or DePaul and always has been. Loyola just this year cracked the top 100. I believe Loyola has a higher list price as well. Younger daughter received $22,000 a year in merit from Loyola and $17,000 from Marquette with stats slightly lower than yours. Both my husband and I graduated from Loyola but we would be concerned sending our daughter there now as Rogers Park has become more crime prone in recent years. But I assume you are from Chicago and are aware of this. Marquette isn’t in the best of neighborhoods either but I haven’t heard of any violent crimes affecting students. Visit the school and many of your questions will be answered. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I am aware of the Loyola neighborhood, but am not too concerned about it. I am scheduled for a visit to UW Madison, and I’m excited to see the campus, it is very highly regarded.

If you’re seriously considering actuarial science, see if it is a major that is offered at each of the schools, or if it is classes offered within another major. I’m not sure that Marquette has an Actuarial Science major that allows you to sit for the exams.
