I will be a sophomore this upcoming fall, and my g.p.a according to the last spring quarter grades is a 1.9!! i had this same g.p.a. after the fall quarter, went up to a 2.3. for winter quarter, but now i'm back at a 1.9 again!! ughh what screwed me over was summer bridge, but anyways, i wanted to do summer school this summer but was not given enough financial aid, therefore, i'm doing nothing now -_________- i would like to know if any of you have taken 16 units or more, i plan to take 4, or 5 classes to step up my game and graduate on time. Any experiences out there? thanks :)

I’m also going to be a second year this upcoming fall. Fall quarter I received a 1.26 (horrible, I know). I failed a class, got two C minuses, and an S. Then winter quarter I got a 3.69, and spring quarter I got a 3.23.
-After my first quarter I was limited to enrolling in 12-15 units only. I was on subject to dismissal status.
-Taking things slower and only taking three classes (during winter quarter) helped me raise my GPA significantly.
-After winter quarter, I was back in good standing and was able to enroll in 18 units for spring quarter.
-Take to your academic advisor. They will help you pick a course load you can manage. He or she really wants you to succeed and will try his/her hardest to make sure you can do well.

Back to your original question, taking four classes really is not tough. It depends on the course you take and your major, but it also matters how you handle your time. To take five classes, which is typically at least 20 units, you’ll need a certain GPA/be on Dean’s List and/or get approval from your academic advisor

Wow that is Amazing! you went up quite fast, but the thing is that i haven’t gotten any email whatsoever saying that i am indeed in academic probation, i remember that when i had the other 1.9 i did immediately get an ap email recommending me to take a chass successful course or whatever, but this time i haven’t gotten anything? the reason for the 1.9 is beacuse i have only taken 2 courses on my major, got Cs on both, so i have a 1.9 final gpa for my major gpa, for the general i have a 2.0 or 2.2. i’m not sure, i’m basing all of this info on what it says on my degree check…i do plan to talk with my advisor though when i go back from vacations, but i just can’t even sleep at night just worrying about this…what do you think?

It’s really weird that you haven’t gotten the academic probation email. Maybe they’ll wait until the quarter starts to send the emails? No idea.

Don’t worry too much about it because there’s really nothing you can do until school starts. Just enjoy your time off and know that your problem will be fixed. When school starts up again, just try and stay on track and you can probably catch-up in no time. In your case you may not even need summer school, if you map out your course and do well. A lot of students don’t do too well during their first year, so remember that you aren’t alone.

Good luck with pulling up your GPA. And don’t forget that if you need help, the Learning Center is really great. You can do SI sessions for extra help in classes, you can take an essay there and they will basically help you turn it into an A paper, and much more. And make sure your TAs know your name. It’s a lot easier for them to give a better grade for someone they know.

thanks! i really hope i’m not in ap, it doesn’t seem fair since i have only taken 2 major courses, not more so that it can affect my major g.p.a. -__-

I can’t tell you much about AP, but regarding your course load question: I took 16 units during winter and spring quarters, all breadth courses, and it wasn’t too bad (except when midterm papers and finals came around…that sucked and required prime time management on my part). It really depends on your classes, but if you find yourself struggling at all, you should definitely use any tutoring resources available to you ESPECIALLY if your GPA is low.

You can hit up the Academic Resource Center ([Academic Resource Center: Home](http://arc.ucr.edu/)) and definitely go to office hours. I know you said you’re planning on meeting with your adviser once school starts, but I just want to reiterate that you should ABSOLUTELY meet with him or her in order to make sure your classes/academic progress are squared away.

Hello, I am kind of in a similar problem. I have just this summer after taking summer school been put on STD but during spring I was dropped from my biology major and from the CNAS major without getting a reason as to why I was dropped. Now I have a hold on my growl account and I havent been able to register for fall classes, but I have not received any email or letter telling me that I have been kicked out or whatever and my advisor is no help at all. Help please!! I dont know what to do!!

So your GPA is in the hole and you plan on taking a harder course load? Not the brightest idea. You need to get your GPA up, and you should do it safely. If you **** up again, you’re gonna get the boot out of college. Take 12 units, be safe for a year. BTW, if you get kicked out of college, they’re going to make you repay your financial aid. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Be safe.

@ scribbs: i am only taking 14 units this quarter (3 classes), and i have only been in academic probation once for the cum gpa & once as well for my major gpa…so IF (God forbid) i do end up “****ing” up again, i don’t think i would be kicked out of school but probably for my major because i’m repeating a course for my major and it is my last chance according to my advisor…she said if i get a C- again in this course, i might be dismissed from my major but i know i will pass it, i have faith in myself and in God (:

If you are on academic probation right now, yes you will be kicked out of school. Don’t believe me? Go ask your adviser or one of the ladies at HOSS.

@scribbs: i emailed my advisor about some classes & she didn’t mention anything, she just said that i need to pass soc 4, if not, i might get kicked out of the major, p.s. i have a 2.1 cumulative g.p.a. & a 1.9 major g.p.a.

You won’t be kicked out of school for having a major GPA of under 2.0. If you continually (I think it is two-three quarters, not completely sure) have a major GPA of under a 2.0, then you’ll be kicked out of the major. (To graduate one day, your major GPA needs to be at least a 2.0.)

To be kicked out of school: Your quarterly and/or cumulative GPA would need to be between a 1.5-1.99 for two quarters in a row. If after that second consecutive quarter, your quarterly and/or cumulative GPA is still under a 2.0, you’ll be Subject to Dismissal. If after this third consecutive quarter and either GPA is still crap, you’ll be kicked out of school. And then there is having under a 1.5, I don’t want to get into that, it’s a more complex thing.

I hope that makes some sense. As of right now I’m a Sociology/Law and Society major so I know the requirements. And good luck with Soc 4 because I had some trouble with that class also. I heard the professor for this quarter is supposed to be one of the better ones, so it will hopefully work out in your favor.

hey eri27s, well my advisor hasnt told me anything!!! he told me to talk to the dean of cnas and i had to give him some paper to see if he could approve the holds being dropped on my account but he rejected it saying i have to declare a major first but the problem is i cant declare a major. The thing is also that i have a 2.2 overrall gpa right now so i dont kow if i can or cannot get kicked out…Ive emailed many people and called and no one seems to be able to give me an answer school is already going to start and i have no idea what to do.

@bigCA19: just calm down ok, you have a 2.2 cumulative, so you’re fine for now, just raise it up ok, p.s. i have a 2.1 cum gpa & i’m not in academic probation for it (:
