I am a current UCR Freshmen in Engineering and I was on academic difficulty (academic probation) last quarter and I think I may receive it again this quarter. Is there anything I can do? I know I can appeal it but is that it? I messed up pretty bad on a final and I know for sure I failed a class... I think my GPA is done T.T

Talk to your academic adviser IMMEDIATELY. They can help you the most at this point and they will know what the next steps are and what to do about your situation.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Best of luck to you!!

Yes, talk to your advisor PRONTO! they may be able to help you get at least one more quarter. Are you taking on too full of a load? Think about going to a JC to make up those classes this summer but make sure you don’t take too many classes and that they are transferable.

Sit down and think about your major, is this really what you enjoy doing or are you doing it hoping you’ll make a certain pay grade? If you are having trouble now, it’s only going to get harder! Were you lazy and slacking off or do you just not get it no matter how hard you tried?

Keep your head up! and keep us update on what you’re doing and if it helped.

Remember kids! Unless you are going into a very specific field, your employers look for that college diploma more as a proof that you are able to achieve a goal!

I spoke to my academic adviser and he was extremely unhelpful. He didn’t answer any of my questions and said all the questions I asked were already answered in his weekly emails which no one reads anyways. When I asked what I could do at this point he simply said the only thing I could do is wait for grades to come out and then I could appeal the dismissal. I asked if there was anyway around the two quarters on academic difficulty and you’re kicked out and he said there was not.

I have heard from some people that it is possible to get a third quarter after 2 quarters already on AD, is this possible?

I am currently in engineering and I am going to change my major, I hope that helps my appeal.

Back in the day I’ve had friends who were given one more quarter. I don’t know if the rules have changed or if it’s only a case by case basis. I’m assuming that your adviser is unable to assist you even if he could because your AP status hasn’t been confirmed.

If you get dismissed and need to appeal, you’ll probably lose all the classes you signed up for for the Spring quarter. As I’ve said before, use that time to get a few classes at a JC, it will come in useful in your appeal that you’re trying to better yourself in a different field.

This is what I got from a 2001-2002 catalog.

"Under certain circumstances, disqualified students may be readmitted upon their petition to the college and interview with the dean. Ordinarily, students will not be readmitted until after the lapse of a year and unless their deficiencies are reparable within a reasonable period of time. During the period of disqualification, a student must give evidence of conduct which indicates that improved academic performance can be expected upon readmission. If readmitted, students must remove their deficiencies through above-average work undertaken in the university. It is usually required that all deficiencies be removed during the first year after readmission. "

I can’t take any classes at a JC right now since I live in norcal and don’t have a car at school. The only thing I can think of right now is saying I am going to change out of engineering and into an easier major like business.

@EminentFigure I got AP first quarter because I s/nc a class my first quarter and I failed math which was 5 units. I was technically only taking 10 units that quarter so the math class pretty much killed my GPA. Second quarter I got AP because I failed a major req engineering course so that killed my GPA since I didn’t ace math.

If anyone could give me anymore help on this subject I’d really appreciate it. I already emailed my adviser asking for the appeal to stay form, is there anything else I should mention on it that might help me stay?

Note: in your appeal do not say “easier major like business”

Business is not easy, it’s just another TYPE of difficulty. plus if you failed a math class, it may be hard to tell the university that business would be easier major since accounting/math are part of the required courses.

Make sure you write that appeal very carefully, you don’t want them denying whatever chances you have to fix your dilemma.

I agree with sapipa177 – DO NOT say “easier major,” or even worse, “easier major like business.” It makes it seem like you do not really care about what you’re learning and are only looking for an easy way out. Plus, I know Business majors who are FAILING their business/economics!

You have to justify that you still want to stay at UCR because you truly feel like taking another direction in your education would help you do better, because you’re studying in a major that you actually care about.

Yeah i heard you might get 1 more quarter as long as ur winter GPA was 2.0+ but cumulative was still under 2.0. By the way do you happen to have a jackass academic advisor named thomas mcgraw who is fat lazy and always sends bs emails saying that he’s medical leave, jury duty, or his toe hurts? Yeah i failed math twice too f on first one and D in winter quarter, what math are you taking?

im in the same situation. I’m really scare of getting dismissed from UCR i’m a freshman and my major is sociology. But my reasonf for having problems were medical issues and I dont know if that will make them have a little more consideration of my case. But they told me that i could appeal.

YES! My academic adviser is Thomas McGraw. I hate him so much. I didn’t have any holds at the beginning of the quarter and then last week he randomly places one on my account. I contact him about it and a week later he replies that the holds are placed automatically on all students in academic difficulty. I replied that if they are auto placed how come it was not placed on my account at the beginning of the quarter instead of 2 weeks into it. That guy is seriously trying to get my kicked out or something. He doesn’t respond to half the emails I send him and is the most unhelpful academic adviser when I talk to him in person. I am considering on putting his name in my appeal and maybe hinting that a better academic adviser may have prevented me from being on AD two consecutive quarters in a row.

So what ended up happening? Are you still here for spring quarter? :)

I am just curious… because two of my closest friends got kicked out after being placed on S.T.D…
I heard that if your overall GPA is under 2.0 after two quarters, then you are kicked out… :/

“I am considering on putting his name in my appeal and maybe hinting that a better academic adviser may have prevented me from being on AD two consecutive quarters in a row.”

This would not be a good idea even if it were true. Deferring blame instead of accepting responsibility for your own shortcomings will surely get your appeal denied.

I was on academic probation for winter quarter because I wasn’t able to get at least a 2.0 GPA for my fall quarter and now i think i would be on it again for spring because i wasn’t able to get high gpa by the end of winter. So i wanna know what happens now… do i get a dismal letter? or do I get another chance. I only be on academic probation once and this is gonna be twice in a row. I’ve been reading things like, I will only get dismiss if I fail to reach the expectations after two terms of academic probation.

Hey Ovaltine99, may I ask how it turned out for you? Like were you able to stay at UCR after 2 consecutive quarters on academic probation?
I might be in the same situation as you, I’m in CNAS and was put onto probation after receiving 1.7 gpa fall quarter, and then I made a bad decision of taking all core classes the following winter quarter. So now I’m afraid that I’ll get put on A.P. again after grades come out for winter quarter. So I was wondering if they dismissed you the second time around you were on A.P.

@ mdinh - I just talked to my academic advisor today and from what I know, you will not be dismissed from ucr if you are placed on academic probation again (so if your term gpa is less than 2.0, but higher than 1.5). You will have another quarter to make it up. However, you have to be careful about your CUMULATIVE gpa, it’s harder to raise than your term gpa and it might get affected by you being on academic probation twice. If your cumulative gpa drops below 2.0, then you will be placed on STD.

At this point, you have 2 options: either withdraw from university (so withdrawing from all classes and get Ws on transcript) or take on academic probation status again and raise your gpa next quarter.

To me, withdrawing from university sounds good in that getting 'W’s on transcript would not affect your gpa at all. However, you would have to meet with the dean of your college and fill out some paperwork and then probably have to apply for readmission again for the spring quarter. In addition, you would have to talk to your financial aid adviser to see how it would affect your financial aid… (also your academic advisor too if you haven’t).

Taking on probation status again would affect your gpa, but at least you would still be enrolled…?

I’m faced with these dilemmas too, and the deadline to file for withdraw is next Friday, so I have to hurry and decide…

Keep in mind that I’m in CNAS, not BCOE, so I’m not sure if your options will be the same.
I’m interested in what your outcomes are, please share if you can. I found it really helpful in talking with my advisor even though I was stressed and tired from my classes…
