Course load first semester senior year

I have been in honors math freshman, sophomore and junior year. Received b’s every semester except one (received an A first semester junior year). Will it hurt my chances to get in to a good school if I drop down to regular algebra during my senior year? GPA 4.2 weighted. 32 ACT. I am applying to selective schools.

Yes. It will hurt your chances. College want to see that you continue to push yourself even in your senior year.

I agree with @ConcernedRabbit. You shouldn’t drop down a course level to keep good grades.

From my experience: suffer now, enjoy later. I was in regular math courses from freshman through junior year (Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus). I decided to take AP Calc BC. I didn’t get higher than a C+ for the first three marking periods. Tutoring and extra help just weren’t helping at all. HOWEVER, I took the AP Exam and I got a 4. That got me out of two required math courses at my college and now I’m taking later classes earlier in my undergrad years.

Keep your courses challenging. They can help out in the end.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thanks! Your advice is very helpful.

If you’re in Algebra2 as a senior and are applying to selective schools, it’s imperative you have algebra2H since selective schools expect precalculus or calculus. If you mean college algebra (IE., precalculus) you have a bit more leeway. What’s the rear of your schedule like and what colleges are you thinking of?

The honors math classes conflict with AP French and Newspaper as well as participation at the Center for Advanced Professional Studies. I will be taking 3 AP classes senior year (French, English, and US Government). I will be applying to Michigan, Madison, Tulane and George Washington. I do not want to give up French or Newspaper in order to take Honors Calc.

I agree with the above. Colleges really want to see that you pushed hard senior year and didn’t give up. On the multiple college tours I went on while searching for a school all of the expressed how if you work hard junior year and they can see you slacked off senior year this will hinder your chances

You don’t have to take honors calc. But will you be in algebra2 senior hear? What math classes have you taken since freshman year?

Honors Algebra, Honors geometry, and honors pre-calc & trig. My counselor is going to write a letter explaining the conflict. Thanks for your advice!
