This upcoming semester I will have to study a lot for AP Exams but I want to also get good grades and not a lot of workload from classes so I can study more. I am thinking of dropping from honors level math to regular as that would mean I don’t have to do as much homework and studying as I have been for math and I would have more time to study for APs. Would this be a good idea? P.S: It’s a new semester so there won’t be any negative effects on my transcript except for the fact that it’s not an honors class anymore.

What grade are you in and what math class are you taking?
Sophomore, Precalculus
First, I would advise for you to talk to your counselor and math teacher to figure out the topics you would be learning and then seeing if you want to drop. Second semester of hnrs precalc is usually calc ab topics. Unless you are pulling in a C or lower, I would suggest you remain in hnrs. Also, what does your schedule look like right now?
Honors English
Honors Precalc
AP US History
AP Chemistry
AP Physics 1
French
Is math the class you’re having the most difficulty in or are you dropping to regular because you want to keep your AP classes?
3 of my other classes are harder I just want to drop down to regular to get less of a workload and more study time
I wish I could give you better advice, but it’s up to you. I see the pros of either route. One thing to consider is what calculus class you are planning to take next year. If you’re going for AP Calc BC, you would want to keep honors. If you want to take AP Calc AB, regular precalc should probably be fine (but different schools have different systems, so you might want to check with your school’s specific pre-requisites). If there’s another non-AP calculus option, it probably won’t matter if you’re in honors or not. If taking regular precalculus would improve your grade (and consequently, your understanding of the topic) significantly, you might want to consider it, but if you think you could get a decent grade in honors without sacrificing your other grades or stressing yourself out unnecessarily, you could push through this semester in honors and considering taking a lower level of calculus as a junior.
I hope this helps! Good luck on your decision!
