Course Schedule Fall 2012

So as an incoming freshman I am wondering about how many changes are actually made to the course schedule once it is up? Is it even worth going through it and making a tentative schedule? I am attending the second orientation.

Are you trying to explore fall 2012 classes?

Thanks, by the way, we did not realize it was already up.

Yes for fall 2012. No problem, the business school sent me an email saying to explore around a bit for courses.

My D was considering FIG because we heard that some courses were very difficult to get into and FIG was a sure shot.
She cannot figure out if these FIG clusters are all the same every year or UT changes the classes. If they change classes, WHEN?
She even asked somebody who sent her emails about orientation (I don’t know who exactly) and did not get any direct answer except that FIG is an absolutely great experience.
Go, figure…
I just checked FIG page and it’s all the same.

Also, we heard that some GE classes are recommended to sign for later (second semester or second year) if they are still needed because AP results for 12th grade will not be available yet and the counselors will not know for sure which GE class will get credit from a test score. They are also supposed to discuss with you at the orientation which test scores will go toward credit and which will go toward placement.

You may want to wait until after April 27 to create a class schedule as that is the last day for returning students to register. That will give you some idea of what classes are full already and require waitlists versus those that are still open.

my incoming freshman CNS (CS major) son is also applying for the Freshman Research Initiative. Not sure how that dovetails with registration for the UGS sections and others. Anyone know when those decisions come out? He will be flying in for the second orientation week.

He wants to sign up for FRI and FIG if that works out.

He visited the school for VIP day and was told that the AP credits already earned will be sorted out at registration, but the 2012 scores will need to wait until the second semester registration cycle.

They will not allow freshman to register, they will open classes for freshmen registration only during orientation time. Right now the schedule must be open for review only.

Do you know anything about FIG?

I realize that freshmen cannot register until orientation. The OP queried whether he/she should create a tentative schedule now. My suggestion was to wait until all the current UT students enroll (after April 27) to make a mock schedule so that he/she can get a better idea of what classes are available/waitlisted, etc. Even general classes can be filled by upperclassmen, thus making a mock schedule now is pointless.

As for FIGS, UT has not released the 2012 list. If your child is in McCombs, there is a number to call to inquire, but I doubt they would know exactly what classes will be offered yet since they are assigned by Undergraduate Studies. FIGS are generally a good idea if your child wants to get into a specific (or any) UGS class. They also meet once a week to socialize which can be really fun.

FYI, FIGs are only for one semester. You take three courses with the other 12ish people in your FIG, one of which is a small seminar with a fairly distinguished professor with only the members of your FIG - great for references/recommendations. This seminar is the UGS class txex86 mentioned. I can’t remember whether you’re required to take a UGS class or not. Other than meeting this possible requirement, it won’t fulfill any other degree requirements - that’s not the point. The point is to prepare you for higher level classes in a small and intimate setting and to cover an unusual topic because it’s unique and interesting.

No, that is not what I was referring to. I was referring to UGS 302 or UGS 303 that many FIGS offer as a course selection which helps tremendously in landing these often difficult-to-register-for classes that are required during the freshman year.

As for the seminar you refer to, that is where the socialization takes place and is a one hour a week non-credit “class” that is held. In McCombs, professors do not preside over these “seminars;” academic advisors and peer advisors do. Perhaps in other disciplines there are professors who participate.

Does it mean that after 4/27 some classes will be closed for registration permanently?
Do you know if 2012 FIG list is usually released in April or May? I hope it is not June, it will be already orientation time.

Thank you. Good to know about references/recommendations.

Yes, some sections will be full after 4/27. Some will have waitlists that a student can sign up for to try and get into that section/class. As I posted previously, it does little good for an incoming freshman to make out a tentative schedule now. Just wait a couple of weeks and you’ll see what I mean about class availability.

I’m all for getting things done early but it’s farrrrrrrr, faaaarrrrrrrrrrrr too early to be looking at Fall courses if you’re an incoming freshman. The only reason I could imagine them sending you that email is to get you excited and mentally prepared for going to UT- perhaps even as a means of recruiting. Wait until May before you actually take it seriously. Even then, if you can’t refer to someone who is familiar with UT, there’s a good chance you’ll have hardly any idea what you’re supposed to be doing.
