Maybe this helps to any students who are interested in transferring to Columbia General Studies in the future.

Courses transferred from School: Community College

Courses transferred:

Introductory Sociology

Microeconomics

Financial Accounting

English Composition I

European Humanities

My spring semester classes are currently in evaluation, I will update this post once I know more.

A question to current students: did any one of you successfully transfer the precalculus courses "College Algebra" and "Trigonometry"?

I’d like to bump this thread to find out Patricks question in regards to math transfer courses:

Does College Algebra and pre-calculus transfer? Patrick, did your pre-calculus courses transfer?

Spring semester

Transferred:
- Intro Philosophy Honors
- Microeconomics Honors
- Managerial Accounting

NOT transferred:
- College Composition II
- College Algebra

I am taking the trigonometry class separate during summer. What I will try to figure out–if anyone has the same question feel free to participate–is ti see if those two courses transfer only if taken together as either a) a precalculus class or b) taking apart but both in sequence.

The College Comp 2 doesn’t transfer because everyone has to take University Writing.

Patrick,

After college algebra, did you take a pre-calculus course? If so, did that transfer?

How much time did you spend at community college? Are you transferring to Columbia as a sophomore or junior?

I was told that college trig would count for the 3 credit Math precalc class.

So I’m assuming if you take a pre-calculus course it will then transfer?

Also, when Columbia does their transfer evaluation, do they give you the credits you earned also? For example, at my current institution, I have several courses that are 4 units as opposed to 3. Will these courses count for 4 units at Columbia also, or only three?

I had a two of those too, they will transfer as 4 credits.

I’m currently taking trig over summer with an astronomy class (ugh) with the the goal in mind to take Calculus at Columbia in fall. So if anyone has successfully transferred pre-calc in the form of pre-calc or college algebra with trig., along with philly I’d be interested in hearing what happened.

Patrick,

I’m taking pre-calc over summer as well, with the intention of going into calc 1 fall 2011. What’s your major?

I’ll be studying Financial Economics, which is a little math heavy I heard. I can do well if I invest the time, but I am not necessarily in love with it (yet).

Patrick,

I’m leaning towards financial economics as well. I’m waiting to speak with my advisor or whoever in regards to comparing econ vs fin econ and seeing which would require more time in college.

How long from the day you received your admissions phone call did it take to receive your tranfer evaluation? I also read this is sent via email?

I am just hoping my bio and chem classes will transfer because I have grown to hate those courses with a passion.

Does the core require sciences with a lab like bio or chem?

Yes science is a requirement. You are required to take three courses in science.

The requirements are parallel with Columbia College.

http://www.college.columbia.edu/core/classes/science.php

I would still need to pursue Physics, but at least chem and bio would be out of the way since you are required to take three science courses.

Do the science requirements require a lab, or can they be like “intro to astronomy” or something?

I am not sure about that. But from the way the science requirements are structured, It can be safely assumed that lab is optional unless you are a pre-med, pre-engineering major. Definitely speak with your adviser at the earliest.

Thanks Random. According to the Columbia College website, you dont have to take a course with a lab, though those that have labs I believe count for four units instead of three - making it maybe somewhat advantageous for some people.

I’m assuming it’s the same for GS students.

Has anyone had a course not transfer that surprised them?

Also, has anyone transferred 50+ units and had to stay over 2 years to finish their degree while going full time?

Lastly, I promise:

I went to a community college, then transferred to a four year institution. The four year institution had a policy by which undergraduates must take 2 semesters of english at their university, despite me having 2 semesters of transferrable (UC transferrable according to California CC standards) of english. Though I know the second semester of english does not transfer, would my additional semesters of english be eligible for transfer under a literature course or something of the sort? Anyone have any input on this?

I also had 2 semesters of UC-applicable English writing courses. The credits transferred but they did not fulfill any of the writing or literature requirements. I still had to take Columbia’s “University Writing” and 2 semesters of literature.

Which English UC courses were those?
