Hi, I currently go to a community college and plan on transferring to a 4 year University in fall of 2014. I have a problem though, I originally wanted to transfer straight into a business program such as Ut-Austin, or University of San Diego, UCSD,Ucla, Iowa State even but those programs require calc. 1 and 2 to be done (Don't know bout Iowa State requiring that though). I have not completed either yet. I have not been able to take either of those math classes because my CC is having me "work up" to those classes and I am currently at college algebra now. So, next semester my CC wants me to take trigonometry unless I can test out of that and go straight to Calc. 1 but I do not think I will be able to pass that CLEP test. My only other option I was thinking is to take Calc.1 next semester at another CC and hopefully that works? I know I would still be down 1 pre-req but it is better than having 2 pre-req not done, right? I was just wondering what I should do in this situation? I was also thinking of going into liberal arts economics at schools as they dont have pre-reqs for Econ (except UCLA). Thanks.

Would you be able to take Calc 1 at another school? As far as I know every CC makes you take a placement test to get into your math level and if you’re only at a college algebra level now there’s a very small chance you’d be able to test straight into calc, and an even smaller chance that you’d do well in it. A solid trig foundation is pretty essential for Calc 1.

Oh see I didnt know if the other cc would make me take a placement test. I thought I could simply register for the class and that’s it.

So would transferring right into a liberal art of Econ be my only option now??

Can you work hard this semester so that you’re at a point where you can take Calc 1 next semester? There is a possibility that the universities may allow you to take Calc 2 during the summer prior to entering, and they may offer you admission contingent upon you completing Calc 2 successfully.

You should contact each of those universities and ask them if they would allow that.

I talked to the University’s and they said that everything would need to be in progress or completed by end of Spring of 2014. Also, the only other way to take any type of calc. class next semester is to take a placement test out of college algebra and that would skip trig. and then I could go right into calc (I dk if i could pass that test btw). I could also take calc. 1 at another CC next semester and hopefully that school will not know I am not “up” to taking calc yet.

Are you at a California community college? I can only speak for UCSD here.

UCSD doesn’t have a business program. The closest thing is Management Science. Officially, it’s called Economics: Management Science. They do have a business minor. That being said, their Econ program is very good. I was accepted only having half my calc sequence done. I think you should be okay with just Calc 1 done. You’d have to take Calc 2 at UCSD(it might be 2 classes since they’re on the quarter system, idk).

No, I’m in Illinois. And that program is what I was thinking of and it’s good if they accepted you if calc. Isint fully done yet as I probably won’t even have either of them done yet.
