Coursework

Timing: Many premeds wish to take the MCATs early and try to cram all their premed courses in during their first two years. This definitely has merits as a plan.

BDM, what exactly do you mean by "early" and what could be considered a "late" time to take MCATs? I'm completely new at this ...

Not red, but early is to finish all your required classes by the end of your 2nd year, study during the summer and take it in Aug/Sept (before you start 3rd year). Late would be taking it June-Oct of the year your going to apply (summer after 3rd year).

about calculus:

if a school wants us to take 2 semesters of calculus to apply (ie harvard, johns hopkins according to teh purple book) and we exempt calc 1 and 2, and take calc 3; then how do we get the 2nd semester of calculus if the next higher course is linear algebra?

it's actually, differential equations...linear algebra comes after calc 2...

Those two schools probably accept AP Credit.

so does that mean that if we have credit for calc 1 and 2, and we take statistics in college, we're good as far as math/calc reqs go?

At those two schools, yes.

ok thanks BDM!

I suppose it's necessary to clarify.

Take Calc III and a semester of statistics, and that should have you covered everywhere. You can't plan on restricting your options to two schools -- especially not those two.

well, yeah...I just noticed those had the most calc requirements for admission.

Does it hurt if my school (MIT) is on pass/no record for the first term and I take some of my premed reqs then? Most people finish their General Institute Requirements in their first two years, and consequently, I will most likely take some premed courses first term.

my school is also covered grades for first semester, but we r recommended to take orgo second yr b/c med schools want to see it...i don;t really mind since i have to retake general chem for any uc schools anyhow though it's basically a waste since chances of getting into 1 of them is near 0% for the avg applicant =(

I was hoping someone could help me with timing my courses. For reference, I just finished my 1st year and I did the bio requirement. I was thinking of taking gen chem this year, then org chem in the summer, then physics the next year (junior year) and then the mcat the summer after that (summer before senior year).
Although people have recommended for me to take org chem in the summer, I'm not sure how I feel about that anymore. (Any thoughts?)
Also, after reading the MCAT thread on here, it seems like I should take the MCAT earlier than August before my senior year. What do you guys think? Is it a good idea to take it August before senior year, or not? I think I'd definitely like to take the MCATs during the summer to give me time to study.
Anyway, how would you guys recommend spacing out gen chem, org chem, and physics now?
Thanks a lot, this has really been bothering me!

1.) I don't like summer courses.

2.) August before senior year is the perfect time if you plan on taking a year off. Otherwise it's too late by about three months. If you really want the summer, then go the summer before, not the summer after junior year.

1.) could you elaborate?

2.) when should I be taking the MCAT then if August is too late? what are the options for a year off? do med schools expect you to do something productive, or could I say travel the world or something?

--- and so when do you suggest I take those remaining courses?

(thank you so much for the response!)

1.) Numerous other threads have discussed this.

2.) You would be expected to do something productive. Travelling the world would work, except that you'll be applying to medical school and have to stay contact-able and available to interview at a moment's notice.

3.) May during junior year is really the latest. June if you're not too worried about damaging your applications a little bit.

4.) I suspect your school has a "typical" protocol. Generally we do gen chem one year, orgo the next, and physics the third. There's a lot of flexibility, though.

Bump, with special attention to "Whether it's too hard" in post #1.

thanks it was so help full. this is definitly going in my pre- med folder. =)

I have a question...will medical schools think you are wierd if you take classes (for example my organic chemistry classes) out of sequence because I have to fit everything into my schedule? Have anyone had similar experience?

Thanks alot

As long as you can handle it, nobody will complain.
