I got accepted to Case with full tuition and am eligible for the pell and a couple grants but those won’t cover room and board and books and supplies. I was wondering can I use outside scholarships to get the rest of that instead of taking out loans or will money from my full tuition be taken out from my outside scholarships?
Thank you.
If any of your full tuition scholarship is needs based at Case, that will be deducted as you bring in outside scholarships.
If you have 30k merit and 15k needs based, you would need more than 15k outside help in order to save any money on R&B.
Even then, I’ve heard of bad stories with full tuition needs based plus outside scholarships. Some schools will tag on the outside scholarship to the first semester, so you will end up getting less aid.
For example, each semester you get 22.5k scholarship from Case. You come in with 2500 in outside help. Case will give you 20k of aid the first semester, but they will also give you 20k of aid the second semester as well. You’ll end up paying 2500 more than you would have at other schools.
I can’t verify this at Case, but I know a few schools that function this way.
All in all, YOU won’t benefit from outside scholarships, Case Western will.
I decided to email their financial aid office with my question and will hopefully get a reply about this.
Seen on their site they can deduct money from your tuition and can make you pay more.
Looks like they won’t be in until January 3rd. I’ll see what they say then and won’t apply for anything I guess for now…
