CPP, Chico, Sonoma or Fresno?

Im waiting on UC decisions but I have been admitted to Cal Ploy Pomona, Chico St, Fresno St. and Sonoma St. Im looking for any opinions about these schools. Im admitted to CPP for plant science. I want to do agriculture but Im also interested in livestock. I live in So Cal and I like the idea of staying close by but I don’t like the fact that there is no “town” around CPP. Any thoughts about the pros and cons of these schools?

I assume if you want to do Agriculture/ livestock , then you applied to UCD? Decisions for UCD will be out Friday so I would wait to make a decision. If you are focusing on Agriculture from the schools listed, CPP or Fresno state seem to be the obvious choices. Not sure what you mean by “no town” near CPP since it is surrounded by residential communities of Walnut, Diamond Bar, San Dimas and Pomona which have entertainment, shopping etc…like most towns.

Thanks Gumbymom Yes I am waiting on Davis and Santa Cruz and I like the college town atmosphere at both. I guess that’s what I mean by town-- I don’t see that at CPP. I have visited CPP ( I live less than an hour away) but I haven’t been to the other Cal States I have been admitted to. I was looking for opinions about the pros and cons of those schools too.

CPP is near everything in LA. You can drive to any community near there. No, there is no “college town” feel since it is off of the 10 but it’s not in the boonies.

Chico State is your quintessential college town similar to UC Davis. I have not visited Sonoma state but hear it is a beautiful campus and residential. Fresno state is a nice campus and a good location for your interests but it gets very hot in the summer and if you have issues with CPP in regards to “no town”, so it may not be a good fit. Visiting is really important since you will be spending 4 years at any of these schools. See for yourself and do not rely on posters to influence your decision.

Yes, I think I’ll do a road trip after I hear from UCs.

College town at a CA public = Davis, SLO and Chico. Which you choose depends on your qualifications and interests.

UC Davis is an outstanding school but, the campus has grown so much it feels pretty impersonal (one man’s opinion). The school has also become a bit more political - with very public tensions and a chancellor who seems to make the news for all the wrong reasons. The city of Davis is also no longer as isolated from Sacramento and the Bay Area. For many, those are good characteristics - for other, less so.

Chico and SLO are under 20k students, are less politically active and remain largely isolated from urban sprawl.

Visit the campuses and see for yourself. If you feel comfortable at a large campus - and can get in - Davis is a great choice. If you get into SLO, and are looking for a smaller school experience, it is also a great. Chico isn’t as selective but, offers a solid education - and a great ‘college’ experience. If Davis and SLO don’t pan out, you’ll be well served at Chico.

Good luck
