Hey guys, I posted in the UC Irvine forum too but would like opinions from this forum too since I feel that the answers were kind of skewed. I’m getting pretty stressed out because May 1st is coming up and would appreciate any input that would like to give their opinion
I like UCI’s campus and community more, and would be in their business administration school. I’ve heard the Cal Poly’s business program is very good as well, but I am majoring in agricultural business, under the college of Ag. I haven’t heard much about the quality of their Ag school but I’m assuming it’s good as well. Cal poly would be a better choice financially, but I’m still holding onto Irvine.
Education wise, which would be better, business admin at Irvine, or Ag business at cal poly?
Thanks for any input.
@eyemgh I felt that agricultural business is a better major versus just regular business, since it’s more concentrated, but I have heard that since it’s still in business it doesn’t matter to employers. With that said, maybe it’s better for me to take regular business and not limit myself to agriculture. Overall, I would say I’m impartial towards studying either regular business or agribusiness.
I could be wrong, but I think you’d be better off trying to convince Monsanto to hire you with a general business degree that you would convincing Apple to hire you with an agribusiness degree. Do you have a farming or agriculture background?
@eyemgh I don’t have an agriculture background, but I picked Ag business because I have many friends in agriculture related families who have shared their experiences and recommended the field. I also thought that it would be easier to find work because there isn’t as much competition as the regular business major at cal poly. Maybe I am misinformed.
It certainly is easier to get into the ag business program than it is Orfalea. You should carefully study the curriculum though and see if it resonated with you. As you will see, there’s a heavy emphasis on agriculture and you will be around a lot of farmers and ranchers. There’s nothing wrong with that, but as a guy who studied a pure science field, but within a college of agriculture, it’s a culture of its own. The last link outlines transferring into Orfalea. It isn’t guaranteed. So, my advice, make sure Ag really speaks to you before committing to Poly.
@NLinsanity thank you for all of your advice! As for marketing in Ag business, that’s the concentration I want to majo in so that’s okay Agriculture originally appealed to me when I was applying, but in the next few weeks I’ll carefully think it over again.
